Melissa's Review:

Middlegame is a standalone novel by Seanan McGuire. I'll admit the cover on this one drew me in since I haven't seen many books with a hand of glory on them. This novel revolves around alchemy and I found myself enthralled while listening. I've enjoyed other books in the past by Seanan McGuire and while this one was a bit different I wound up really enjoying it!

Our two lead characters are Roger and Dodger, we meet them as children and I quickly became intrigued because they don't meet in a normal way, Dodger speaks in Roger's mind. They figure out they can help one another in their studies since Roger is great at language and Dodger is great at math. After some incidents as they grow up they lose touch and wind up reconnecting when they run into each other during college. They slowly figure out more about themselves and why they should be together (not romantically) and that there are people trying to shape them into the perfect beings so they can attain their full powers. The abilities Roger and Dodger have are pretty low key as the novel starts but you start noticing things as it progresses. They have no clue about any of this so we get to learn about it along with them.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect of Middlegame, but it really impressed me and had me intrigued the entire way through. This plot is unique and the characters are so different from the norm we see in the genre. If you're a fan of Fantasy novels try this book out.

The Narrator:

Amber Benson did such a good job with this book! I'm glad I did the audiobook format since it's a large novel. The narrator was a great choice and voiced the characters well and kept my attention.
