Currently Reading [57]

Okay, I'll admit it, I slacked and didn't finish reading Tempt the Stars. So I'll be reading that this week, as well as the below book.

First Position - Prescott Lane
Emory faces life’s challenges at the one place that’s never failed her, the ballet barre. But even the barre can’t steady her when fate brings her face-to-face with her old college flame, Mason, who’s hoping to return to the NFL after a career-threatening injury. Before they can surrender to their sexual desires and find salvation in each other’s arms, they need to come to terms with their past. Mason must confront the demons that have set him on a path of self-destruction, while Emory must decide whether to keep her painful secrets locked away, or expose them and risk losing the love of her life. But nothing can prepare Mason for what Emory has kept hidden, or the possibility that he himself may be to blame for the very secrets she keeps – and why they continue to haunt her.

Review: Chasing the Shadows

Title: Chasing the Shadows
Author: Keri Arthur
Series: Nikki & Michael #3
Format: ebook
Source: NetGalley
Release Date: September 24th 2013
 photo 4star.png

Chasing the Shadows is book three in the Nikki & Michael series. The book can be read as a standalone, but I highly suggest you read these in order. If you choose to read them out of order, you will miss out on what happened between the two main characters, how they got together, their previous missions, etc. Anyway onto the characters.

Nikki is restless just sitting around waiting for Michael to come back from missions he deems too dangerous for her to tag along. So when Jake, her former boss that is recovering from injuries, calls to see if she wants to help him out on a case, she jumps at the chance. Michael just so happens to be selected to go on a mission only to find out that Nikki is already in that area and on the same investigation. They join forces exactly like in the previous books, but this time it is to find out why rich women are being kidnapped and brutally murdered even though their spouses pay a ransom.

Michael is a vampire that works for the Circle. Most of his missions are dangerous, he has to investigate and take out paranormal killers. I'll be honest in this book, Michael is a little bit thickheaded when it comes to relationships. He wants to protect Nikki, but doesn't think about what she wants or how she wants to be treated. He's a little bit like a caveman, which I understand and forgive since his character is 300+ years old, it did get on my nerves a little bit though.

The bad guy(s) in this book are a little bit more intense this time around. The women that are being abducted and held for ransom, are found in a desolate place raped and with severe physical injuries. While it doesn't go into great detail on the torture, there are enough details that will make some people slightly uncomfortable.

All in all, I enjoyed the cat and mouse aspect and felt that this installment was a tad more gritty than the other books. Chasing the Shadows is the strongest of the Nikki & Michael series so far and I really enjoyed watching their characters grow. I suggest this series if you're a fan of Urban Fantasy with a dash of Paranormal Romance.

Heads up Veronica Roth fans, you can preorder a signed copy of Allegiant on Barnes & Noble right now. Link is HERE.

One choice will define you.

What if your whole world was a lie?
What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything?

The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.

But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.

“I couldn't put it down. So I finished it last night and all I can say is WOW! This book was amazing and different.” Brianna (Book Blogger)

“I loved how the author took a different approach to writing a love story in modern times with the paranormal element present. I thought it was absolutely wonderful and refreshing. Marvelous!” Kathy H (Amazon Reviewer)

“I will admit I scoffed at the way it started but in the end I had fallen in love with this story…completely untraditional it was a very original idea, not to mention modern. This story had such a good plot and the story structure was sound.” Kacii – The Kooky Bookworm (Book Blogger)

As he spoke I checked out the surroundings. It was just starting to get dark outside but I could still see the black outlines of the trees that surrounded us on either side of the narrow road.

“Why are we in a forest?” I asked, a slight hint of fear creeping into my voice as I was unnerved by the fact that we were in a place where Elementals were most likely to inhabit.

“Because the house is located in the forest. Don’t worry we’ll be safe there, I’ve hardly had any Elemental sightings when I’ve stayed here,” he said, but something about it didn’t sound very encouraging.

“And how often do you stay here?” I said slowly, my tone wary.

“Whenever I’m in the area.” His avoidance of a definite answer unnerved me even more as I knew what he was going on to say.

“I have to say, that isn’t very often, but the four times I’ve been here since buying the place have been peacefully silent.”

I was dumbfounded by his statement and my eyes were wide in shock as I watched him to see if he was joking. I saw nothing that led me to believe that or to make me doubt his words though.

“You’ve only been here four times?! How do you know this is a safe place then? It could be crawling with Elementals for all you know.”

He laughed at my sudden outburst of panic.

About the Author
Mia Hoddell lives in the UK with her family and two cats. She spends most of her time writing or reading and loves anything paranormal. Mia always had a love of writing but never reading. She was more interested in sports and hated sitting still - despite getting three poems published before the age of sixteen. Finally though, she found some novels that captured her interest and developed a love of reading which is now one of her favourite hobbies.
Mia began with poems before moving on to short stories. Although she enjoyed this, Mia found she had too much to tell with too little space, so later on she created her first series 'The Wanderer Trilogy' and from there other ideas have emerged. With a total of nine books planned at this moment, she is busy working on her second series 'Elemental Killers' before moving onto the next idea on her ever growing list.

Currently Reading [56]

I'm a bit behind on my TBR and review right now so I'm hoping to start and finish these this week. Wish me luck!

Chasing the Shadows - Keri Arthur

Nikki James is in San Francisco at the request of her partner and best friend, Jake. The wife of an old friend is missing, and Jake intends to find her—whatever the cost. The authorities believe the kidnappings to be the work of a sick mind, but Nikki knows that the truth is something much worse—especially since she seems to have an unexpected psychic link to the killer. But as always, she is more than willing to risk her own life to save another’s.

For Michael Kelly, Nikki’s bravado is a source of endless terror. He wants nothing more than to make Nikki a permanent part of his life, but he knows that her quest is sure to get her killed. As they chase through the sewers and tunnels of San Francisco and the body count begins to rise, Michael badgers her to stay off the case, but Nikki has no intention of complying. She wants him to realize that she’s either a full partner in his life or she’s out. But nothing prepares her for the price she has to pay for her stubbornness—the life of someone she loves.

Tempt the Stars - Karen Chance
Being a goddess is a lot less fun than you might think. Especially when you’re only a half goddess, and you only found out about it recently, and you still don’t know what you’re doing half the time. And when you’ve just used your not-so-reliable powers to burglarize the booby-trapped office of a vampire mob boss.

Yeah, that part sucks.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for Cassandra Palmer, aka the Pythia, the freshly minted chief seer of the supernatural world. After all, Cassie still has to save a friend from a fate worse than death, deal with an increasingly possessive master vampire, and prevent a party of her own acolytes from unleashing a storm of fury upon the world. Totally just your average day at the office, right?

Review: Bound by Night

Title: Bound by Night
Author: Larissa Ione
Series: MoonBound Clan Vampires, #1
Format: ebook
Source: Edelweiss
Connect: Website
Buy: Amazon, B&N
 photo 5star.png

Nicole Martin is a scientist that comes back to her hometown to claim control of her family's company. After so many years of hiding and trying to escape from the face that her family was killed in front of her, she has to face the music. Nicole's character seems a little bit too naive for my taste. I kind of pushed that aside since her character came from a mega wealthy family and she was probably coddled growing up due to the vampire rebellion that killed her family at such a young age.

The vampires in this series are quite different from the norm in this genre. Vampires are second class citizens, only there to fulfill human's needs. While most are basically slaves to the human race, not all are docile. There are vampire clans that rebel, and this is where we meet Riker. He is part of the MoonBound Clan and it definitely was not love at first sight when he met Nicole. His mate was Nicole's childhood nanny, who was killed. This left Riker an angry vampire and not very fond of humans. The basic plot of Bound by Night is something I feel like I've read before, but there are a few twists that make the book unique. The world building on the other hand is fantastic and exactly what I would expect from Larissa Ione. If you're a fan of her other series I would highly suggest Bound by Night.

He’s looking down at me, making me feel small at five feet two inches. He has to be at least six feet tall. Broad shoulders. His suit today is gunmetal grey with blue or black pin striping—I can’t tell which. His shirt is a beautiful lavender color with a darker purple tie. "How do you know I'm not an addict?" I ask, softly. He smiles at me, warm, genuine. "Because, you've come to return the money I left you last night as a tip." My jaw falls open. "How"—I swallow hard—"did you know?" His smile fades a little. "Because, why else would you come down here?" I close my mouth and look down at the floor. His ability to read me is really scary. "Since you haven't eaten since last night, I'm going to take you to lunch." I feel my face flush bright red, both in anger and complete irritation. "That is not why I'm here. I've survived for my entire life fending for myself, I don't need some rich hot shot business mogul buying me food." I reach into the pocket of my bag and pull the folded up paper from it. I thrust it towards him. He refuses to take it. Tears of frustration trickle down my cheeks. "Damn it Mikah, take it." I push it at him again and again he refuses. "I'm not a damn charity case. I don't need your money or your food." The bell chimes. We’ve finally reached the skyway. As soon as the doors open, I drop the folded up paper with his money in it and bolt from the elevator, turning left, hoping and praying I can get away. "Vivienne, stop." I hear him say behind me. I keep going, walking quickly but not running. Yet. I'm trying hard to not make a scene. But he doesn’t seem to care about that. He catches me quickly, spins me around. I grab hold of his arm to catch my balance so I don't go sprawling onto the floor.

It is from Glendale, Arizona that Zoey Derrick, a mortgage underwriter by day and romance and erotica novelist by night, writes stories as hot as the desert sun itself. It is this passion that drips off of her work, bringing excitement to anyone who enjoys a good and sensual love story.

Review: Dead Sexy Dragon

Review: Drea
Title: Dead Sexy Dragon
Author: Lolita Lopez
Series: Dragon Heat 1
Format: e-book
Source: Netgalley
Release Date: Aug 6, 2013
Publisher: Forever Yours
Length: Novella (25k)
Subgenre: Erotic romance
Buy: Amazon, Nook
Rating: 3-stars

Drea's Review:
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The sun is setting and Stig is minutes from transforming into a dragon—a dragon in heat. His dead friend’s little sister knocks on the door. She’s crying and desperate. He can’t send her away, especially not considering he gave her a key to the house and promised to help if she needed. But letting her stay during the worst eight days of the next three years isn't smart. Cora has stumbled into some trouble since her brother died. Stig is the only person she can think of to go to. It’s an added bonus that she’s had the hots for him for ages.

This was a quick, light read that pretty much unfolds the way you imagine it will. I liked the premise but the execution wasn't anything spectacular...though the author does manage to pack a good amount of conflict plus several sex scenes into a scant 25k. If you're looking for some sexy times with dragon shifters that is easy to get through and actually does have a plot, grab this one. I give it 3-stars.

Review: Escaping Reality

Review: Drea
Title: Escaping Reality
Author: Lisa Renee Jones
Series: The Secret Life of Amy Bensen #1
Format: e-book
Source: Netgalley
Release Date: July 22, 2013
Length: Novel
Subgenre: New Adult
Buy: Amazon, Nook
Rating: 3-stars

Drea's Review:
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A note on a bathroom mirror sends Amy fleeing New York. This isn’t the first time she’s abandoned her life in search of safety. Following her “handler’s” instructions, she heads for Denver. She meets Liam—a sexy passenger who asks few questions but allows her little freedom. They tumble into a tumultuous relationship. For a girl accustomed to being alone, Amy clings to the togetherness she gets with Liam…and how he makes the world go away. But her past could be dangerous for them both.

The writing on this was fairly good and kept my attention with its fast-paced style. The love scenes are hot, hot. Liam is super sexy…most of the time. Amy is only mildly annoying as the narrator. A few things that irritated me about the author’s writing style. Namely, she rarely uses contractions, and Amy seems to spend the majority of the book telling us all the things she’s never ______ (felt, done, needed, etc).
But my biggest issue with this story is that absolutely nothing is resolved. The book ends with a huge cliffhanger and even more questions than when it started (seriously, 95% of the questions that began on page one are still there on the last page). So, if you can’t stand cliffhangers, stay far away from this book. If you like serials and dig New Adult, grab this one…and then be prepared to salivate until October for book 2’s release.

Review: Hearts in Darkness

Title: Hearts in Darkness
Author: Keri Arthur
Series: Nikki & Michael #2
Format: ebook
Source: NetGalley
Connect: Website
Buy: Amazon, B&N
 photo 4star.png

Private Investigator, Nikki James returns in book two of the Nikki & Michael series, she is back to her normal job of solving crimes. Her current investigation is to find a missing person (child) which leads her to a resort in Jackson Hole. On an unlikely stroke of luck, Michael is told to team up with Nikki because their paths will cross while he's investigating rich men going missing at the resort. After the events that happened in book one, I was worried they would just automatically be okay/make up and everything would go back to normal. I should have known better, KArthur had them overcoming their awkwardness with one another and also finding a way to manage their feelings all while solving the case(s).

I'll be honest, I was worried this book wouldn't be what I'm used to getting out of a Keri Arthur book. Book one in this series wasn't what I expected, though I did enjoy it. Luckily, Hearts in Darkness has a lot more of the KArthur vibe that I remember from the Riley Jenson series. While it's still lacking on the smutty goodness, I have to admit this book kept me interested. I wasn't sure who the bad guy(s) would be, but one thing I'm glad is the same is the paranormal aspect.

Just in case you missed my review of book one here's the heads up again: this series is a re-release, so if you've read this before, don't get confused. While you don't necessary have to read this in order so far, I would highly suggest it so you know their past together. If you're a KArthur fan or even just someone that enjoys Urban Fantasy with a slight romance twist I suggest this series.

WoW [71] - Louder Than Love

Title: Louder Than Love
Author: Jessica Topper
Release Date: September 17th 2013

In this powerful debut novel, a young librarian grieves the loss of her husband...and discovers a love that defies classification.

It's been over three years since a train accident made a widow of Katrina Lewis, sending her and her young daughter Abbey back to the suburban town of her youth...the only place that still makes sense. Lauder Lake is the perfect place to hide and heal.

Recluse rocker Adrian "Digger" Graves survived the implosion of his music career, but his muse has long lain dormant. Until Kat hires him to play at her library—not on the basis of his hard rock credentials but rather, because of the obscure kids' TV jingle he wrote years ago. In a case of mistaken identity, Adrian stumbles into the lives of Kat and her comically lovable daughter.

Using tattoos as a timeline, Adrian unfurls his life for Kat. But as the courtship intensifies, it's unclear whose past looms larger: the widow's or the rocker's. Will their demons ever rest, or will they break these soul mates apart?

Why I am waiting:
I've been in the rock star type of mood when choosing books lately. Add in a librarian to the mix and I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

What book are you waiting for this week?

Drea's Review:
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This story is told from a Dom's point of view--one who has recently lost someone he's realized was dear to him, and is now dealing with his mother's cancer. In steps Crystal, an employee of his mother's, and his company's who doesn't take any of his domination. Strangely, she's exactly what he needs while his world crumbles around him.

I'll admit the cover and the brief blurb was why I grabbed this one. I haven't read any of the other stories in the trilogy. I really liked being in the head of a Dom during a pivotal point in his life. He's believable and definitely sexy. Given the erotic tone, I expected several love scenes and only got one...that ends so abruptly I thought maybe I'd received a broken copy of the book.

Giveaway + Interview: Anya Breton

I have the lovely Anya Breton on the blog today to subject her to an awkward question interview. I hope you all enjoy it, let me know if you do and I might make this a normal type of post. Below the interview Anya is going to give one lucky reader a paperback copy of her book Fire & Flame.

On to the awkward interview! I'll start it out easy ;)

1) What is/are the oddest thing(s) you've had to research for an erotica book?
The sexy answer would be the stockade Oliver straps Ashley onto in A's Surrender (I knew it existed but was way off on what it was called). But I don't actually consider that to be "odd".

The actual oddest things I've researched for an erotica would be what a caterer's cart was called (for Alpha Exposed) and how a Ferrari could break down in a way that would strand someone in the boonies (for Sweetly Bad). Not sexy or funny, but the truth.

2) Most "out there" place one of your characters has had sex (in an already published book or WIP)
The nightclub in Alpha Exposed maybe?

Clearly the sequel I have penciled in for that should have even more "out there" sex, huh? *taps her chin*

Yes, more sexy weretiger action, please!

3) Does being a romance writer affect your choice of undergarments? (Thanks Rebecca for the question!)
haha. I *did* buy some underpants with cute little ruffles on the ass after I was published. But I think that's just because I saw them then rather than before.

4) Word(s) that make you cringe while reading romance books?
I don't particularly like the word "dick". I don't know what it is about that one but it makes me think less of whatever character uses it. I think I made myself use it in one of the early books because the editor at the time didn't like how I'd used "organ" instead :D

5) You're at a bar and have to pick who you want to wrestle with. Your options are a drag queen, or a midget. Who do you pick and why.
Midget. I bet the drag queen would pull my hair. The midget wouldn't be able to reach. Plus, I secretly want to wrestle a midget SO badly.

I would have went with drag queen, I'd throw glitter in their eyes ;)

6) We've battled on Twitter with name that Disney song(s) before. Which Disney song do you believe is the dirtiest?
You opened my eyes to the dirty lyrics in "Make a Man Out of You" but it would be cheating to pick that one. So, um, maybe Gaston? There's something about this song that makes me giggle:

When I was a lad I ate four dozen eggs
Ev'ry morning to help me get large
And now that I'm grown I eat five dozen eggs
So I'm roughly the size of a barge

*fans herself*

7) Tell me about your recently released book, Sweetly Bad. What made you decide to write a female character that is plus sized?
My editor had suggested I do a sequel to Wickedly Good featuring the younger brother Drew. I hadn't considered it because, well, Drew was such an ass.

A few months later Ellora's Cave put out their special call for "Curve Appeal"--stories featuring curvy heroines. I instantly thought of Drew and thought it would be perfect to have his romantic downfall be a curvy girl who could hold her own.

For Erica I wanted a real woman with real worries without going overboard on the body image issues. I ended up with a kick ass mechanic who wasn't afraid to tell the hottie that he can't kiss for shit ;) She's probably my favorite heroine to date.

This story was such a challenge. I knew I had to stay true to Drew's character...yet somehow keep the reader from despising him. I had to give him a reason to turn his life and himself around (preferably for more than just love). The reader had to be rooting for them to get together at the end. And the romance had to be believable. All in under forty-thousand words. No pressure or anything, right?

I'm glad I pushed myself through several stalls and finished this because it's the romance I'm proudest of.

Thank you for joining me and answering my silly questions. I can't wait to read Sweetly Bad, I can honestly say I haven't read a book with a plus sized woman as the main character so I'm excited!

Anya is an awesome author that has written Romance, Erotic Romance, Urban Fantasy and even Young Adult. I've enjoyed everything that I've read from her so far and think you all will enjoy her work too.

Here is what is up for grabs!

Fire & Flame

Sara McKenna longs for a career in television--far away from the violence of her Fire witch heritage. But when her father is struck down through a typically savage stroke of fate, Sara is summoned home by her father's second-in-command--her childhood rival, Fire witch Brent Conley.

Brent failed to protect the only man he's ever respected. He refuses to fail his former priest's haughty daughter. Sara must produce a pure-blooded child to continue their coven's line, and Brent intends to personally see to that duty.

Although Sara will fulfill her duty, she has every intention of returning to her media career, without letting Brent steal her heart. But when Brent sees Sara again, he realizes just how much he's missed her--and how much he wants her to stay. Will Brent be forced to free the one thing he's always wanted to possess?

I've already read this book and enjoyed it, you can check out my review for it HERE.

Rebekah, Sinner's temporary FOH(front of house)/soundboard extraordinaire is filling in for her brother who was injured during a bus crash. Her first day on the bus and her main objective besides doing a great job is getting with her crush, Trey Mills. With Rebekah still dealing with lingering self doubt from previous relationship issues, she isn't looking for a relationship, she's trying to heal her sense of self.

Eric Sticks is the drummer for the band Sinners. At first sight, Eric is so enamored by Rebekah that he is tongue tied. Being one of the most passive members of the band, I was slightly worried while reading that Eric wouldn't be able to get the girl. Eric has always been a band member that I've wanted to know more about, and I was really excited to get to know him better.

I felt that Wicked Beat gave a lot more back story to the main characters compared to the other books in the series. I got to know about Eric's childhood, and Rebekah's health/emotional issues, basically the things that makes them who they are. Though I didn't find most of that out until after the halfway point, it was there, so I was happy. As you can tell by the cover of the book this is erotica, it has romance, but there are quite a few over the top sex scenes. That being said, this series is not for the faint of heart, but anyone looking for a naughty rock star book will love it.

WoW [70] - Antigoddess

Title: Antigoddess
Author: Kendare Blake
Release Date: September 10th 2013

The Goddess War begins in Antigoddess, the first installment of the new series by acclaimed author of Anna Dressed in Blood, Kendare Blake.

Old Gods never die…

Or so Athena thought. But then the feathers started sprouting beneath her skin, invading her lungs like a strange cancer, and Hermes showed up with a fever eating away his flesh. So much for living a quiet eternity in perpetual health.

Desperately seeking the cause of their slow, miserable deaths, Athena and Hermes travel the world, gathering allies and discovering enemies both new and old. Their search leads them to Cassandra—an ordinary girl who was once an extraordinary prophetess, protected and loved by a god.

These days, Cassandra doesn’t involve herself in the business of gods—in fact, she doesn’t even know they exist. But she could be the key in a war that is only just beginning.

Because Hera, the queen of the gods, has aligned herself with other of the ancient Olympians, who are killing off rivals in an attempt to prolong their own lives. But these anti-gods have become corrupted in their desperation to survive, horrific caricatures of their former glory. Athena will need every advantage she can get, because immortals don’t just flicker out.

Every one of them dies in their own way. Some choke on feathers. Others become monsters. All of them rage against their last breath.

The Goddess War is about to begin.

Why I am waiting:
Mythology is a huge weakness of mine when it comes to books. I've heard great things about Anna Dressed in Blood books, so this is going to be a must read.

What book are you waiting on this week?

Drea's Review:
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

In a steampunk version of Victorian London filled with blue blood-like vampires, werewolves, and humans with mechanical enhancements, rebels intent on bringing down the established Echelon blow up an important Echelon building. As a rebel leader herself—the feared Mercury—Rosalind Fairchild wishes she’d thought of the idea first…but if she had, no one would have been caught. Least of all her little brother. Now she must halt her own plans to bring down the oppressive regime to get him back.

Sir Jasper Lynch has a short time to capture the rebel Mercury before he loses his head, literally. He doesn't count on discovering Mercury is female and dangerously seductive. And when an out-spoken female named Rosa applies for the position as his secretary, he’s distracted beyond reason. How can he have a fierce attraction for two females, at the same time, after so long feeling nothing?

The sensuality in this story grabs you early and doesn't let up. There’s just the right amount of action, intrigue, and sexy time for my taste. Even though I came into this series on book three, I didn't find the back-story to be too overwhelming. There are bits that had me glossing over and moving on, but for the most part it wasn’t confusing. The author has created an interesting universe with loads of conflict for her wonderful characters. And these two had me turning the page faster and faster. I’ll definitely be reading more from her.

Spotlight: Sympathy For The Devil

Title: Sympathy For The Devil
Author: Shyla Colt
Series: The Purgatory Series #2
Buy: Amazon, ARe

Heavenleigh is stunned to find out Daddy Dearest is no other than Lucifer. If her mother can keep this under lock and key for sixty years, what else is she hiding in her closet? Reeling from the reveal her lift continues to spiral out of control when Lucifer, or Lucien as he likes to be called, comes top side for a visit at Purgatory.

Once the Queen of hell Layla left Lucien’s to protect the unborn baby growing inside her. Forced to feign the ultimate betrayal, she turned his love to hate. Now makes an offer he can not refuse, her life in exchange for Hevenleigh’s freedom.

Lucien spent years searching for a way to open gates. Finding out the ruin of his only child is the key is a slap in the face. He has a chance at a second family who won’t betray him. It’s an offer her can’t refuse. Layla handing over her freedom is a bonus he plans to exploit. She made him the laughing stock of the underworld, and the time for payback is finally at hand.

She held her hand up to the door and held her breath. It clicked open stunning her. He hadn’t changed the wards in all this time? She stepped inside and the doors slammed behind her. The lights went up and she found him seated in black, leather chair.

“I’ve waited almost a century for this moment. To watch you come back and beg me for something. The way I did when you left me, do you remember that Night?”

“Yes,” she whispered. The foyer that used to welcome him home seemed cold. There was no fire in the hearth behind him and the couches were black leather.

“I figure you want something. If I say no, you’ll be humiliated because you made the trip for nothing. If I say yes, it’ll come with a horrific set of clauses. So I win, or I win.” The maniacal laughter that spilled from his perfectly shaped lips sent an icy stab of fear through her bones. This was the side of him that scared her, though it’d never been directed toward her until now. “So tell me what brings you down here to … slum.” He splayed his elegant fingers over the arms of the couch and leaned back, observing her.

“Our daughter.”

“Oh… she’s our daughter now? Funny how that changed as soon as I caught wind of it.”

“She’s always been your daughter, Lucifer, that was the problem.” She was pinned to the door, lifted off her feet and held by her throat before she could think to react. Damn, I forgot how fast he is. He didn’t harm her, or exert pressure, but his point came across loud and clear.

“You’d better watch how you talk to me now Night. You’re no longer in my favor, wife or not.”

“I meant it literally.” She licked her lips. “It was why I left, her duality…this place would’ve eaten her alive. Between the pull to be dark and the call of the light, she wouldn’t have stood a chance. She needed a neutral place to learn control, how to balance, and thrive.”

He lowered his hand and she slid down, grateful when her feet kissed the ground. “Go on.”

“Even on the surface she ran into issues growing up, starting fires, fits of rage, and at times a pension for some very dark behavior. You were just starting to rebuild your army .I couldn’t allow her to be just another soldier.”

“After two eons together you didn’t trust me enough to tell me?” His words twisted the knife into her gut. Shame weighed heavily on her.

“Not at that time… war was all you saw.” She shook her head.

“It was my right to know. And why cheat?” Despite his aloof fa├žade his voice held a hint of hurt.

“I had to make you believe it. You always saw through me like glass. I needed to ...” She shook her head.

He narrowed his eyes leaned forward to peer deep into her brown eyes. His red gaze burned her. “That was a lie too wasn’t it?”

“Y-yes.” Her lower lip trembled. Relief slammed into her like a seven ton. Finally after all this time he knew the truth.

He tsked. “What am I to do with you? You knew when we joined our souls our bound could never truly be broken. Marriage to the king of hell is eternal, it was in the contract. Now you return to tell me your mass exodus was in the best interest of my child.” He frowned. “It does nothing to quell my anger. I am not appeased. Did you think your revelation would soften me in some way?”

“No.” Ashamed she kept her gaze trained on the ground. A part of her had hoped. Too many romantic comedies had her thinking she had a snowballs chance in hell of a happily ever after. “I came to make a deal.”

“What would you have that I can’t take?” His sneer felt like an open hand smack to the face. Her heart stuttered. All the years she’d been pinning he’d grown his hate. It was an impossible situation of her own making. She wanted to open up, tell him how difficult the years had been. That she’d never stopped loving him. Instead she buried her head in the sand like an ostrich and prayed for the best.

“Me.” Guess I really am a coward.

“Are you really that self centered?” He scoffed.

“My freedom in exchange for the prophecy, we both know if you managed to convince Heavenleigh to open that gate, all the powers in heaven will be after her. She’ll never be safe. The life she has now will be in ruins. The only place she’ll have to go is here, and over time…you know exactly what will happen to her.”

“We’d be out. Protection wouldn’t be an issue.” He scoffed.

“She’s a child of the light too. What do you think being enclosed in darkness indefinitely would do? Some of these people are here for a very good reason. Unleashing them would be like swallowing the sun. Is your need to prove a point worth that?” She held her breath. Have I gone too far?

“Details.” His voice was nonchalant but his eyes were anything but. His mind moved a mile a minute, always ten steps ahead.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“Hmmm.” He gave her a heated once over. “You probably will be. I need more details to truly consider your offer. What does… having you really mean?”

Squeezing her eyes shut she balled her hands into fists. I knew we’d come to this, eventually. She licked her dry lips, peeled her eyelids open and met his cool stare. “What do you think it means?”

“No games! You came here and propositioned me. So, you’d better come correct.”

“It means… I’m your puppet. Is that what you wanted to hear?” Just when I thought I couldn’t sink any lower he shows me I’m wrong. Typical for him in general, but it wasn’t a talent she’d ever expected to be on the receiving end of.

She balked. This is the only thing I have to barter. Is this a ploy to make me beg?

“I want to hear you say you’re my slave.” A lustful leer twisted his face into something ugly.

“Are you starting now?” The bravado she placed in her tone conflicted with the desolate forest of her soul.

“I want to sample the good before I…” he grinned. “Purchase them.”

“I’m your slave.” Uttering the words snapped the thin reed of hope she’d held for them into.

“Yes, you are.” He nodded.
