Sydlynn Hayle is a half witch, half demon who just wants to be wholly normal. She's biding her time until her 18th birthday when she can renounce her magic forever and be ordinary. Problem is renouncing her magic probably means cutting ties to her quirky family. And they mean a lot to her. Even if they DO force her to move cities far too often.

So she's in another small town with another batch of cliches like the cheerleader bully. But this time Sydlynn has had enough of it. It's going to be different now.

Throw in two love interests in the form of the coven's newest addition--Quaid--AND the bully's ex-boyfriend--Brad and a huge betrayal, and you have an exciting story.

For me this book got off to a slow start with a little too much emphasis on Sydlynn's angst. But as the story progressed, I read faster and faster, eager to reach the end. I would have given it four stars if there'd been more of a love story (because I LOVE romance).

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This blog tour includes a giveaway of a Kindle Fire! Sign up for the tour-wide giveaway below!

Author Bio:

Patti Larsen is an award-winning middle grade and young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. But that sounds so freaking formal, doesn't it? I'm a storyteller who hears teenager's voices so loud I have to write them down. I love sports even though they don't love me. I've dabbled in everything from improv theater to film making and writing TV shows, singing in an all girl band to running my own hair salon.

But always, always, writing books calls me home.

I've had my sights set on world literary domination for a while now. Which means getting my books out there, to you, my darling readers. It's the coolest thing ever, this job of mine, being able to tell stories I love, only to see them all shiny and happy in your hands... thank you for reading.

As for the rest of it, I'm short (permanent), slightly round (changeable) and blonde (for ever and ever). I love to talk one on one about the deepest topics and can't seem to stop seeing the big picture. I happily live on Prince Edward Island, Canada, home to Anne of Green Gables and the most beautiful red beaches in the world, with my very patient husband and four massive cats.

WoW [61] - Awaken

Title: Awaken
Author: Meg Cabot
Series: Abandon Trilogy #3
Release Date: July 2, 2013

Death has her in his clutches. She doesn’t want him to let go.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she’d be forced to live forever in the one place she’s always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.

But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.

If the balance between life and death isn’t fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce’s home back on earth will be wiped away. But there’s only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.

Why I am waiting:
I love books to do with anything mythology. This one is about Persephone and looks awesome. I had no clue that Meg Cabot wrote anything like this, but it looks like one New Adult / Young Adult series that is a must read.

What book are you waiting on this week?

Cover Reveal: Someone Else’s Skye

Someone Else’s Skye - Christine Wenrick
Series: Men of Brahm Hill #1
Coming October 1, 2013

Kane, Brethren Guardian and one of the few, Natural Shape-Shifters left in existence, survived the bloody battle of Brahm Hill but lost two of his closest friends. For all of his good-natured sarcasm and eye-popping good looks, Kane finds himself unable to completely forget about that night, so he seeks comfort in the one thing he is truly good at... sex!

This shape-shifting bad boy believes in having a good time—a very good time, usually involving some mingled heavy breathing with a sexy Dhampir in a tiny closet somewhere. But when he is sent into the freezing tundra of the Northwest Territories to investigate a troublesome supernatural being on the loose, he ends up crossing paths with a woman who almost instantly drives him insane with want... because she doesn't seem to be falling for the shifter's charms.

It’s completely inexplicable.

Skye Matthews has a job to do, and she needs to be focused on that, not spending all her time rebuffing the advances of this way-too-cocky and handsome stranger. Yet, there is something irresistible about this self-involved playboy that Skye can’t seem to stay away from. And when the unidentified Kane is sent to investigate takes an unnatural interest in Skye, protecting her becomes the Guardian’s top priority.

About the Author:
Christine is a graduate of Washington State University where she received a BA in Interior Design. And true to form of using mostly her ‘right brain’, she splits her time between her commercial design career and her imaginary world of writing. She lives in the scenic Pacific Northwest where she enjoys hiking, camping and photographing many of the wonderful places that served as inspiration for her Charmed Trilogy. Her biggest reward in life is any given day when one of her books connects with a reader because she herself is such a lover of reading. Some of her favorite authors include Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, and Kimberly Derting.

Keeping Her by Cora Carmack Preview

A new e-book novella from Cora Carmack, the bestselling author of Losing It and Faking It!

Garrick Taylor and Bliss Edwards managed to find their happily-ever-after despite a rather . . . ahem . . . complicated start. By comparison, meeting the parents should be an absolute breeze, right?

But from the moment the pair lands in London, new snags just keep cropping up: a disapproving mother-in-law-to-be, more than one (mostly) minor mishap, and the realization that perhaps they aren't quite as ready for their future as they thought.

As it turns out, the only thing harder than finding love is keeping it.

Early Review: Damn Him to Hell

Title: Damn Him to Hell (Saturn's Daughter #2)
Author: Jamie Quaid
Format: ebook
Source: Edelweiss
Release Date: June 25, 2013
Buy: Amazon, B&N
 photo 4star.png

Being one of Saturn's Daughters isn't the easiest thing in the world. Since accidentally damning her boyfriend to hell in book one (Boyfriend from Hell) Tina Clancy has learned a little bit on how to control her power(s). However that won't help her out much when The Zone, the toxic part of Baltimore, suddenly has pink gas floating around and turning people into crazy, violent people. If that isn't enough the chemical plant that is near the town is trying to cover it all up and craziness ensues.

I'll be honest - Damn Him to Hell will have you really confused if you read this series out of order. I strongly suggest you read Boyfriend from Hell first. I really enjoyed that Damn Him to Hell had a lot more back story on several of the characters that I wanted to know more about. Andre reappears and quickly became my #1 interest because his character was such a mystery. Tina seems more comfortable with her powers and isn't afraid to use them when necessary. I still want to know more about Saturn's Daughters, and I have a feeling book 3 will shed more light on that. Since not everything was wrapped up, I'll definitely be waiting on book 3 to be released so I can see what happens next. If you enjoy Urban Fantasy be sure to read this series.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

WoW [60] - Hunted

Hunted - Kevin Hearne
Release Date: June 25th 2013

For a two-thousand-year-old Druid, Atticus O’Sullivan is a pretty fast runner. Good thing, because he’s being chased by not one but two goddesses of the hunt—Artemis and Diana—for messing with one of their own. Dodging their slings and arrows, Atticus, Granuaile, and his wolfhound Oberon are making a mad dash across modern-day Europe to seek help from a friend of the Tuatha Dé Danann. His usual magical option of shifting planes is blocked, so instead of playing hide-and-seek, the game plan is . . . run like hell.

Crashing the pantheon marathon is the Norse god Loki. Killing Atticus is the only loose end he needs to tie up before unleashing Ragnarok—AKA the Apocalypse. Atticus and Granuaile have to outfox the Olympians and contain the god of mischief if they want to go on living—and still have a world to live in.

Why I'm waiting:
I love this series. It has mythology, and to be honest not many of the books I read have druids in it much less a male lead so I really enjoy it.

What book are you waiting on?

"When one Feral died, the animal spirit flew to the next in the line, the strongest Therian with that animal's shifter DNA, marking him to take the dead shifter's place. The marking could take weeks, even months, but ultimately, another would be marked."

Spotlight: A Demon in Waiting

Title: A Demon in Waiting
Author: Holley Trent
Series: Sons of Gulielmus 1
Buy: Kindle
Release Date: June 17, 2013

Publisher: Crimson Romance
Length: Novel (50,000 words)
Setting: I-40 East! (And Southeastern North Carolina)
Subgenre: Paranormal romance [comedic]
Heat level: Sexy
Warnings: Strong language, sex, tongue-in-cheek religious references

After twenty-eight years, skeptic John Tate is cast out of his cult. As he has neither money nor education, he’s completely without prospects. That is, until Gulielmus, his long-silent demon daddy, swoops in with a job offer this half incubus can’t refuse: seducing women for Team Hell. Sounds like a great gig for a virgin.

Ariel Thomas knows smart women don’t stop for hitchhikers, but the one she spots on the Arizona roadside lures her like an irresistible mirage. For once in her well-regimented life she decides to do something out of character, and offers the gorgeous hobo a ride. She’s got a long drive ahead to North Carolina, and what better way to stay awake behind the wheel than to have eye candy to ogle?
John’s unsophisticated charm makes Ariel swoon, and he’s enthralled by her worldliness. The two fall hard and fast, but Gulielmus wants to put the skids on their cross-country love affair. John may be hiding his true nature, but Ariel has some secrets in her family tree Team Hell won’t forgive.
Demon spawn aren’t supposed to fall in love with their prey, and John is forced to make the age-old choice: good versus evil. Who’d be easier to run from—his powerful demon father or the woman who actually thinks he’s worth loving?

from Chapter One
John bolted upright from the hard cot he’d been tossing and turning on and readied the shotgun he kept at the bedside. He fired off a shot without warning when the intruder took a step forward.

He should have fallen. His chest should have been a bloody ruin, but the massive blond pillar stood there like a statue…and a bored one, at that.

The intruder yawned and tilted his face down to assess his buckshot-shredded button-up shirt. “Fuck.” He flicked some shrapnel off his apparently bulletproof chest and growled. “That was a two-hundred dollar shirt, son.”

Realization settled into John like bad chili on an empty stomach. Even without formal introduction, he knew this man. He was programmed to. “You’re him.”

“What gave it away?” The blond pillar reached out and ruffled John’s hair, an odd gesture toward a man who was nearly thirty.

John flinched.

“Was it my invincibility or my unworldly good looks?” He wriggled his brows.

John took a moment to assess him. He had the same yellow-blond hair as John that’d always made people at the compound whisper. His mother’s hair was nearly black, and his supposed father had brown hair. And there were those same startlingly blue eyes and the square chin. The only thing preventing the man from resembling a Ken doll was his bulk.

John put down the gun. “I thought Ma was lying all these years. Fallen angel? Come on. You could have given me some warning you were coming. Woulda cleaned up.” He swept an arm demonstrably, indicating the dilapidated cabin’s dusty, drafty interior.

“You don’t seem scared enough of me,” the man said.

“Should I? I suspect you want something that only I’ve got, so what do I have to be afraid of?”

The demon lifted a brow and quirked one corner of his mouth into a lazy smirk—the same one John wore in every one of the few photographs that existed of him. “Hmm.” He extended one perfectly-manicured hand to John to shake. “Gulielmus, no last name. Most people call me William or Bill. You can call me Dad.”

John shook his head. “No thanks. What do you want?” He patted the nearby chair for the overalls he thought he’d left there, suddenly hyperaware of his underdressed state.

“Not one for chit-chat are you? Oh well. It’s time to go to work, son.”

John gave up on the overalls and slipped on a pair of dirty jeans instead. “Why do I get the feeling the family business will suck the life out of me?”

Gulielmus flashed a wealth of white teeth. Surprisingly, none were excessively pointy. His tongue probably wasn’t forked, either, but John couldn’t tell for sure. “No, no. We do all the life-sucking. Didn’t your mother tell you?”

“Like I said, I wasn’t sure if she was deluded or if maybe she’d gotten into some bad apple juice.”

“You’re charming. I’m glad I kept you in my back pocket for so long because I really need ya.” He grinned again and held out his hand once more. “Might I see your palm?”

John clenched his hands into fists and held them at his side. “Why?”

Gulielmus’s grin receded in a flash. “Because I said so. I’m asking because I’m that kind of father. I’d prefer not to take it.”

John sighed and held out his left hand.

Gulielmus took it in his and used the index finger of his other hand to trace some complex symbol onto his palm. It was too fast to make out, and felt a lot like a disorganized tickle. He tried to draw his hand back, but Gulielmus was already done.

John’s palm went numb, followed by his fingers and wrist. He squeezed the hand into a loose fist and gave his sire a hard stare until the numbness moved up his arm to his torso and radiated out like a starburst.

And then, as quickly as it started, the tingling went away. He felt the same as before, but more energized. It was as if every cell in his body had a keen awareness of its existence. They called out for action. For movement. For…food?

“What did you do to me?” he asked.

Gulielmus looked on with bemusement. “Woke you up. Normally I claim you kids right after birth and get you online, but getting into that rinky-dink compound poses some problems for me. Too many old religious symbols hidden out of sight, I think. Kept me from teleporting. Amazing how much power things people have forgotten about can hold.” He shrugged as if it was all so inconsequential. “I had to resort to more pedestrian means to get in. Anyway, I’m so glad you survived childhood. Are you even vaccinated? Oh, don’t answer. Doesn’t matter now.”

“Am I damned?”

Gulielmus shrugged. “Define damned.”

“Am I going to burn in hell forever?”

“No. You need to redefine what Hell is.” He made a waffling gesture with his hand and paced. “It’s an amorphous thing. You design your own Hell, and for some folks, Hell is their worst fear. I suggest you pick a different fear if fire isn’t your thing. Perhaps being cuddled eternally by giant bunnies or something.” He shrugged and bared straight white teeth in a grin. “Regardless, you’re gonna live a long, long time kiddo. Fringe benefit of being a demon.”

“Cambion, technically, but don’t quibble. Now, why don’t you pack up that raggedy bag of yours and you can start your assignment?”

John hoped his cocked brow relayed his suspicion sufficiently. “Assignment?”

Gulielmus nodded. “Mm-hmm. Got your territory all carved out. Wouldn’t want to overlap with one of your siblings, but I think you’ve got it in you to be far more productive than that lot. You’ve got the look.”

John scoffed. “Whatever you say.” He zipped his bag closed and tightened the laces of his boots. It wasn’t that he was excited about the revelation of his true nature. He was just that bored. In twenty-eight years, he’d never been anywhere except the compound, into town, and out on a few overnight trips on behalf of their illustrious leader. And town was just more of the same—more die-hard lunatics who believed their leader’s preaching.

His eyes rolled, even thinking it. He’d been born a skeptic, but it wasn’t until he was around twelve that he realized he lived in a cult.

They all really thought when they died, their spirits would join their family members on the other side and adhere themselves into one giant, shapeless, spiraling ball of energy. The bigger the ball, the more energy. The more energy, the more eternal swagger.

Or something.

John had once asked the leader what all that disembodied energy was good for. Did the energy blobs come through and do good deeds or were they just like jewelry? Something people strove for, but that had no actual purpose beyond exhibiting one’s wealth.

That question had earned him a backhand and a week on outhouse duty. Apparently, one should not question the leader, even if the leader was a certifiable lunatic—John had seen the certificate. The leader had it framed and hung it on the wall as evidence of the World Beyond’s treachery.

John had given some thought to running away numerous times in the past, but never figured out the logistics. Where would he go? Who would he reach out to? There was no one. His entire world had been right there in that compound.

And now, the world was his for the taking. Being a cambion didn’t sound that bad.

“Well, let’s go. I’ll get my toothbrush.”

Review: Strange Ideas

Title: Strange Ideas
Author: Louise West
Format: Ebook
Source: Author
Release Date: May 27, 2013
Buy: Amazon UK | Amazon US
 photo 4star.png

Strange Ideas:
Death, Destiny and Decisions- four brand new tales to creep you out and mess with your head, plus another chance to read the popular short story, Late: a ghostly tale.
A Flip of the Coin: Do you believe in Heaven and Hell? Jimmy didn't, until a stranger appeared at his death-bed with a shocking proposal...
Stamp: Ben awakes from a one-night-stand with a hangover and an unusual souvenir. What does it mean? And what happened to the girl who gave it to him?
Rock God: Adored, idolised, worshipped. In our celebrity-obsessed culture, pop stars are treated like gods. But how far do their powers actually go?
Superstition: Laura knocks on wood, avoids black cats and never walks under ladders. Her husband calls her a freak. Maybe he'll wish he had believed her...
Late: a ghostly tale: Long after the children have escaped for home, a lone schoolteacher is working late. But is she really alone? Is someone there that she can't see? And, if so, what do they want?

Strange Ideas is 5 separate stories compiled into one book. I'll be honest, most of the time I don't read books like this, but this was a really refreshing read that I enjoyed a lot. I think I enjoyed it so much because the short stories were well written and I couldn't guess the end of each story from the beginning. Below is a few sentences about each story.

A Flip of the Coin is about a man named Jimmy that is on his deathbed in a hospital. Death comes to visit him and gives a unique way on how Jimmy will be deemed fit for Heaven or Hell.

Stamp was slightly scary. Ben and his friend Tim head to a club and when Ben meets a pretty lady named Cassie things get interesting. She asks if they want to join her at another club, and they quickly agree. I think most people would do as Ben did, act without thinking of possible consequences. The consequence is something not expected, and left me intrigued while reading.

Rock God is about a young woman named Mia that goes to a concert with her boyfriend Darren even though she's not a fan of the band. This story was slightly predictable, but still interesting.

Superstition is about Laura, a young woman married to Adam, a slightly abusive (verbal and rarely physical) husband. Laura is very superstitious and it was quirky but endearing.

Late: a ghostly tale has a school teacher in school after hours all by herself. I'm pretty sure that would be enough to freak out most people. When she hears a strange noise and sees something that shouldn't be there she winds up running out of the building. Little did she know, she can't escape from her new acquaintance.

Taylor's Website/Blog:

River Weston, a video game designer, uses her Fae magic to create a program that will benefit the demons and humans in a world that is recovering from a virus outbreak. The program, Hollow Man, allows people to create a hologram and protect themselves during battle. While I admit the idea of the program would be useful in real life, I think it would probably be abused if we had that type of technology. Some sort of checks and balances would have to be enforced, which luckily this book had.

Chase Hawkins (aka Hawk) is a Guardian who is dispatched with a team to strip Earth of destructive technology. In the Guardian's eyes, this will resolve everything by starting the world again with a clean slate. So when a mutated virus surfaces and starts affecting humans, everything goes crazy and Hawk and his teammates have to reevaluate their strategy. The virus is something out of horror stories - no one is really sure why it is affecting people at random, but it's Hawk and River's top priority to figure out what is causing it.

Fair Game starts where book two (Mind Games) left off from what I've read. Since I haven't read the previous books in the series, I was a little bit lost for the first few chapters but quickly figured everything out. All in all it was a pretty solid read, though a tiny bit slow for me. I enjoyed the relationships that River had with the demon gang of kids, as well as with her younger brother. I loved that the past was mentioned throughout the book so I know what had happened, it helped me fill in a lot of blanks. I strongly suggest this series be read in order, but it doesn't have to be. If you enjoy science fiction books with a strong intellectual woman you will love this book.

WoW [59] - Rogue Touch

Rogue Touch - Christine Woodward
Release Date: June 18th 2013

Twenty-year-old Anna Marie was just fired for the third time--this time from a bakery. Why can't she hold a job? Well, for starters, she dresses . . . differently. She looks like a Goth girl to the extreme, her shock of white hair contrasting with her head-to-toe black garb, her face the only skin she chooses to reveal. But Anna Marie doesn't have a choice. Her skin, her touch, is a deadly weapon that must be concealed. She accidentally put her first boyfriend, Cody, in a coma when they kissed. Horrified, she ran away to Jackson, Mississippi, where she's been living alone in a cramped apartment and scraping by on food stamps.

Then she meets otherworldly James and everything changes. He's just like her--completely alone and also on the run. To elude James's mysterious and dangerous family, the pair takes to the highway. As they cross the country, their simmering attraction intensifies and they both open up about their secretive pasts. James reveals that his true name is Touch and he christens Anna Marie Rogue. But with danger at their heels, they know they can't run forever. Rogue must decide if she'll unleash her devastating powers once again, which she swore never to do, in order to save the only person who seems truly to understand and accept her.

Why I am waiting:
I read roughly a year ago that there would be Marvel female character books being released sometime in the future. I assumed this was a rumor that wouldn't really happen. I'm so glad I'm wrong, this looks awesome, I can't wait to get my hands on it.

If he can break through Katie’s newfound independence, they just might find they make a perfect team—on the road, on the job, and in bed.

Review: Wicked As She Wants

Title: Wicked as She Wants
Author: Delilah Dawson
Series: Blud #2
Format: Ebook
Source: Edelweiss
 photo 5star.png

Ahnastasia Feodor, the Blud Tsarina of Freesia (princess of Freesia) wakes up in a suitcase nearly drained of all her blood. After attempting to attack Casper Sterling, a drunk musician, she finds out that everyone believes that she is dead and her family was killed. Ravenna, a gypsy fortune teller is now ruling Freesia. Ahna's goal throughout the book is to get to Freesia and reclaim her royal status. Casper Sterling and his little orphan sidekick Keen lead the way with a lot of bumps in the road.

Ahnastasia's character started out as an ice princess that thought everyone was beneath her. She was uptight and to be honest not the kind of character I typically enjoy reading. Thankfully, her character evolved, or maybe I just got to know her better as the book went on. I adore Criminy Stain (from Wicked as They Come - book 1) and was intrigued and slightly tentative when I found out Casper would be a main character in Wicked as She Wants. I'll be honest, his character has come a long way from book 1 and even the novella (The Peculiar Pets of Miss Pleasance). His character has grown and I pretty much loved him from the start of this book.

One of the more entertaining scenes in the book is Casper, Ahna and Keen traveling on a flying brothel. That's right, I said a flying brothel. I never really know what to expect from D. Dawson's books plot-wise, the one thing I can count on is a amazing book that I can't put down. I highly suggest this series, and cannot wait until the next book is released.

Review: Fire and Flame

Title: Fire and Flame
Author: Anya Breton

 photo 4star.png

Everything is normal in Sara McKenna's life until her childhood rival walks into the college class she is teaching. Hearing that her father, the fire witch priest, was killed and she has to go back home isn't news she ever wanted to hear. With the people that killed her father still on the loose, her world isn't exactly safe. She and Brent (her childhood rival) were attacked just driving a few hours back to her father's house. Add the fact that they can't be in the same room without getting on each others nerves leads to an interesting read.

Brent is a hottie, literally. He's a fire witch that has taken over the coven that Sara's father lead. Being the new fire witch priest is a lot of responsibility, one of which is looking after Sara. To be honest in the beginning I wasn't sure if the two could be in the same room, much less romantically involved since they haven't gotten along since childhood. Somehow, Anya managed to convince me and made me root for them. There are quite a few obstacles in their way throughout the book, which I enjoyed since I dislike books that have a fairy tale romance from the get go.

Don't be confused by the cover, Fire and Flame isn't erotica. It is however an awesome read that anyone who enjoys romance books with witches in it will enjoy. Oh and did I mention it's free right now (until 06/08/13)? Go get this awesome freebie while you can!

WoW [58] - The Loneliest Alpha

The Loneliest Alpha
T.A. Grey

Release Date: 06/14/13

One look will change their lives forever.

Lingerie designer Alicia Clarkson just had to open her stupid mouth. Now thanks to trying to defend a fellow pack mate, Alicia’s been blindfolded, tied up, and carted off to the new alpha of the Oregon pack—Gavin MacKellen.

However, the blindfold doesn’t come off so soon as Gavin reveals he’s searching for a mate. But Alicia’s curiosity gets fired up when Gavin refuses to reveal his face to her. Just what happened to him? He talks to her from shadowy corners and behind closed doors. The man is as allusive as a squirrely fox. But Alicia doesn’t play games and the quiet spoken, hoarse voiced alpha doesn’t stand a chance against her. They settle on an agreement, thirty days for them to get to know each other because that’s the only way this cowboy alpha will have it.

Gavin MacKellen needs a mate. But he knows no good woman would ever want to look at his face after the incident he suffered. After one look at Alicia Clarkson all his plans fly out the window. The woman’s beauty has stunned him damn near speechless. She torments his thoughts and Gavin finds himself yearning to know everything about her. He admires her creativity and intelligence, the cool way she handles herself in stressful situations. Most of all, he aches deep in his chest to taste her lips. Those beautiful sweet lips, but in order to kiss her without showing her what a monster he was, he has to get creative.

A relationship forms and as love threatens to grow between them Gavin struggles to cope with his physical appearance in the face of the beautiful Alicia. Will she be the one to stand in the face of a monster and accept or will she turn her back on him as everyone else has?

Why I am waiting:
I ran across this one on Goodreads and it looks promising. Alpha male + an agreement = SEXY TIMES. *cough* I mean, an interesting read?
