Waiting on Wednesday [3]

Title: Deadlocked
Author: Charlaine Harris
Release Date: May 1st, 2012

Pages: 352 (Hardback edition)
Publisher: Victor Gollancz Limited

"With Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), in town, it’s the worst possible time for a body to show up in Eric Northman’s front yard—especially the body of a woman whose blood he just drank.
Now, it’s up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl’s fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who’s out to make Sookie’s world come crashing down." (-Goodreads)

Why I am waiting:
Honestly, I am waiting on this book to see if the series has gotten better. The last few books in this series were not the best, so I hope the writing has returned to how it was earlier in the series.

Black Dagger Brotherhood Blog Hop GIVEAWAY!

I was super excited about this blog hop when I saw it. I do however know that some of you guys are not aware of this series so I thought I would give a review of the first book.

Dark Lover is the beginning of a pretty amazing series called the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The main characters in Dark Lover are Wrath and Beth. Throughout the series there are different main characters in each book, though it does include most/all of the other characters that you become familiar with as you read. (ie: Book 1 = Wrath, Book 2 = Rhage, Book 3 = Zsadist, etc.)

On to the review!

Wrath is a pureblood vampire who is king to a watered down line of vampires. He is in charge of the brothers, who are vampire warriors that protect their race and fight the bad guys. One of the brothers, Darius, asks Wrath to look after Beth (his daughter) for him, while the King scoffs a little he listens to reason and checks it out. Little does Wrath know that Beth is everything he is looking for in a woman.

Beth, a half human is unaware of her vampire side. She is not prepared for the changes that she will face, and she needs help. Beth is a journalist who is looking into a violent crime. She is a strong character that I find perfectly suited for Wrath. She keeps him in place, which someone needs to!

The writing changes prospective from Wrath to Beth to even other people. There are bits in the book that are in the bad guys perspective. The bad guys are called the Lessening Society (aka Lessers) who are ruled by the Omega, their all mighty evil overlord. While you might think the change in point of view would be confusing, I found it let me get a grasp of what each person was thinking and basically walk in their shoes. I felt that I was able to understand the characters better.

The way JR Ward writes made me so intrigued in all of the characters. I got a feel for each brother as I read and I wanted to know more about their stories. That is easily remedied by reading that person's book in the series.

*Please note that this series has sexual content quite a bit. If that is a no go for you, then I suggest you do not read this book!
*There are terms used throughout the entire series that will make no sense to you if you do not look at the glossary. It is slightly difficult to remember the terms used and their definitions. Luckily, Ward puts a glossary which you will put to good use until you are familiar with the wording. (ex: shellan, doggen, etc.)
*You will stay up and read this book, good luck putting it down.

Please enter the giveaway using the below Rafflecopter form.Winner will be contacted by email, and asked to confirm which email address they want the amazon e-gift card sent to.

[Edit: Took down rafflecopter, it kept being glitchy when I was trying to announce the winner. Winner has been notified via email.]

Teaser Tuesday [2]

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
This week’s teaser comes from “Discount Armageddon” by Seanan McGuire:

"Dominic reached into the fried chicken bag, pulling out a container of mashed potatoes and setting it delicately on the bed. "I wasn't sure what the appropriate 'I'm sorry I took you into the sewers without proper preparation and got you beaten up by lizard-men' gift was." "

Currently Reading [2]

Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire

Thoughts so far:
This book reminds me slightly of Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series starring Kat & Bones. I don't think it will be too similar since there are some crazy talking mice so far. The main character is a woman who hunts down monsters. In the first part of the book she is in a bar dancing around trying to spot the ghoul that is killing people. She finally spots him and follows him out only to start a fight with him.

Look for tomorrow's blog post for a teaser of this book.

A Sliver of Shadow Review

Book: A Sliver of Shadow (Book 2)
Author: Allison Pang
Rating: 5/5

Goodreads blurb:
Just when her new life as a TouchStone — a mortal bound to help OtherFolk cross between Faery and human worlds — seems to be settling down, Abby Sinclair is left in charge when the Protectorate, Moira, leaves for the Faery Court. And when the Protectorate’s away…let’s just say things spiral out of control when a spell on Abby backfires and the Faery Queen declares the Doors between their worlds officially closed.

The results are disastrous for both sides: OtherFolk trapped in the mortal world are beginning to fade, while Faerie is on the brink of war with the daemons of Hell. Along with her brooding elven prince Talivar and sexy incubus Brystion, Abby ventures to the CrossRoads in an attempt to override the Queen’s magic. But nothing in this beautiful, dangerous realm will compare to the discoveries she’s making about her past, her destiny, and what she will sacrifice for those she loves.
Abby Sinclair returns in A Silver of Shadow, the second installment in the series written by Allison Pang. Abby is still the touchstone to Moira, the Protectorate. Like in the first book Moira is gone, though this time we know where she is. Abby has to make difficult decisions to try to reach Moira and fix everything that is going on.

I feel bad for Abby, it seems that she cannot get a break in this book. It is a constant bombardment of issues which happen one after another that Abby must take in stride and solve. She is forced to face her fears, and you can see her character grow as the story evolves.

The CrossRoads, the pathway between Faery and the human world is closed abruptly. This causes a lot of issues for Faery in the human world since they are essentially stuck. Not only that but without the CrossRoads open, they will begin to die (fade). Having a human TouchStone will give them more time, but the end result is the same. It is up to Abby to try to solve why the CrossRoads was closed and how to get it back open.

There are hunky men as usual for a possible love interest, though Brystion (Ion) is no longer the main man. Taliver, who happens to be Moira's brother is in the picture and I found myself rooting for him. When I finished reading book one I had hopes that Abby and Brystion would stay together or work things out. Now I am not so sure who I want Abby to be with. I found myself liking Taliver more and more as this book progressed.

A Sliver of Shadow ends in a cliff hanger, which is one thing that I hate in books. Well not hate, it just makes me really want the next book right now so I can see what the heck happens. So on that note, this was a great book and I cannot wait to read the next one.

Waiting on Wednesday [2]

Title: Shadow of Night
Author: Deborah Harkness
Release Date: July 10th 2012

Pages: 592 pages (hardback edition)
Publisher: Viking Adult

"Together we lifted our feet and stepped into the unknown"—the thrilling sequel to the New York Times bestseller A Discovery of Witches Deborah Harkness exploded onto the literary scene with her debut novel, A Discovery of Witches, Book One of the magical All Souls Trilogy and an international publishing phenomenon. The novel introduced Diana Bishop, Oxford scholar and reluctant witch, and the handsome geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont; together they found themselves at the center of a supernatural battle over an enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782.
Now, picking up from A Discovery of Witches’ cliffhanger ending, Shadow of Night plunges Diana and Matthew into Elizabethan London, a world of spies, subterfuge, and a coterie of Matthew’s old friends, the mysterious School of Night that includes Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh. Here, Diana must locate a witch to tutor her in magic, Matthew is forced to confront a past he thought he had put to rest, and the mystery of Ashmole 782 deepens.
Deborah Harkness has crafted a gripping journey through a world of alchemy, time travel, and magical discoveries, delivering one of the most hotly anticipated novels of the season." (-Goodreads)

Why I am waiting:
Book one of this series was one of the best books I have read in a long time. See my review on the first book here. I felt that the story was spun so well that I was sucked into the book. If the second book is anything like it, then it will be a huge success.

From the synopsis on Goodreads (see above) this book will pick up directly where the story left off. The thing that I am most interested in, is seeing how Diana embraces who she really is. While this did happen slightly in the first book, I feel that she has a way to go. I cannot wait to see how the main character's relationship evolves. Will it be fairy tale perfect, and the other can do no wrong; or will it portray a more realistic relationship? I do not believe that we will figure everything out in Shadow of Night, especially about Ashmole 782. But I hope that it will reveal more details on what it truly does.

Make Up Forever Aqua Liner

Aqua Liner

I was in the market for a new eyeliner while at Sephora and ran across the Aqua Liner by Make Up Forever. I had never tried the brand Make Up Forever, and it appears to have decent ratings. The colors were pretty and it gave a thin liquid line which is exactly what I wanted.

Color me disappointed when I actually used the eyeliner. It barely lasted an hour, if even that long. The liner flaked apart like it was a super cheap brand. I tried it with and without eye primer to see if it might help, but the results were the same. I am not sure if perhaps I just had a bad batch, or if this is how their products are. It makes me not want to purchase anything by them though.

If you have any suggestions on eye liner that will not smudge or flake off let me know!

Currently Reading [1]

A Sliver of Shadow by Allison Pang

Thoughts so far:
So far this is a great book. It starts off strong and I sure hope it finishes that way. I was impressed with Pang's first installment of this series so I knew I had to buy this book. I am roughly 25% through the book and it has not let me down and shows no hint that it might be a bad book. I will post a review when I am finished with it in a few days.

March 2012 Birchbox

This is the first month that I have not peeked at what is in my Birchbox and the anticipation almost killed me. I have been quite happy with this sample subscription company for almost a full year now. I do not see myself cancelling anytime soon.

I believe there were 19 variations this month for the normal box, and 4 variations of the Teen Vogue box. I did not receive an email asking if I would like to opt in for the Teen Vogue box so the box below is one of the normal boxes.

What did I get?

1. Color Club Nail Lacquer in Age of Aquarius
I saw this color on Molly's nails in the March Birchbox Favorites video and fell in love. I am so happy that this was in my box. *Does happy dance*

2. Harvey Prince Yogini
It stinks, the end.

3. Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Cleanser

I've been breaking out recently so this might be helpful. I know some people have posted saying it worked really well so I am excited to try it.

4. Lulu Organics Lavender + Clary Sage Hair Powder
I've been wanting to try a dry shampoo for long time. It smells good and I love the packaging.

5. stila Smoky Eye Card
I will probably try this out, but I am not very impressed with this sample.

Extra: Tea Forté skin-smart teas
I LOVE tea! This came with 3 different flavors to try.
*Cherry Marzipan - Green tea for corrective repair
*Honey Yuzu - Green tea for natural renewal
*Cucumber Mint - Green tea for youth recovery

MyGlam Horrible Scent Issue - March Bag

Have you noticed that your March MyGlam bag smells horrible? It was such a strong scent that I emailed MyGlam to find out what happened. It smells like paint thinner or gasoline to me. I got a response from them within 24 hours and here is what they said.

"We have looked into the smell situation and believe the odor is from the glue used to make the brushes. We have had the brushes out for several days in our offices, and in the very few instances that there was an odor, it has dissipated. We suggest you let the brushes air out from the packaging and believe this will address your issue. Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns."

Have questions you need to ask Myglam? Email them using this link.

March 2012 MyGlam

I just received my March MyGlam bag, and I am not quite sure how I feel.

What is in the bag?

1. Keracolor Color Enhancing Leave-In Treatment
2. Sachet with the following items:
*Pur-lisse Pur-Protect SPF 30 Essential Daily Moisturizer
*Murad Eye Lift Perfector
*DermStore $25 off $50 Coupon

3. Murad Absolute Bronzing Boost SPF 15
4. MyGlam Classic Crease Brush & Case

The reason that I am not too sure how I feel about MyGlam is the following. MyGlam advertises that "every bag contains 4 or 5 full-sized products or deluxe-sized samples for you to enjoy." Yet if you look at what I received you can easily tell that there is 1 full size (brush with case), 3 foil packets, 1 sample, and 1 coupon. I keep sticking in there another month to see if it gets better, but I am not really sure how much longer I will be subscribed to MyGlam.

I crunched the numbers and figured out the worth of the 3 "or" items.
Murad Sample is worth $6.46
Pur-Lisse Sample is worth $16.00
3Lab Sample is worth $38.64

I feel that a sample company should not send out an "or" item is the worth of those items are vastly different.

Dermstore: 20% Savings on the following products
*Pur-lisse Pur-Lip Comfort & Pur-lisse Pur-Protect SPF30
*Murad Eyelift Perfector & Murad Absolute Bronzing Boost SPF15
*3Lab Perfect Cleansing Foam

Keracolor $38 $29.95 by using this link

Simple - Smoothing Facial Scrub

I am part of a program through SheSpeaks in which I receive a Simple Facial Scrub in trade for honest feedback. When I first saw this brand I thought it was a new brand and product line. Little did I know that it is the #1 skincare line in the UK! I found out that this line is great for people with sensitive skin, which I have.

I received the facial scrub from SheSpeaks roughly one week ago. I have used it daily since I received it and I am a believer now! This is a great facial scrub that left my skin soft and smooth. My skin has not been super dry after washing like some other products leave me. It has no perfume, no color, and no unnecessary ingredients. The best part is that it has Pro-Vitamin B5, Vitamin E and Rice Granules in the mix so it will exfoliate the skin gently.

I loved this product so much that I bought the light moisturizer yesterday. This line has wonderful products, and I highly recommend them.

Price: 6.99
Places to buy: CVS, Target, Walgreens, etc.

Disclosure: I received a Simple Facial Scrub from SheSpeaks and Simple. My opinions, however, remain my own.

I have never heard of this so I figure that some of you guys haven't either. It is legit and you can actually get money back for buying things online. I know, it sounded like a scam to me too.

Basically you go to Ebate's website and click on the store that you will be buying from online. By clicking on their link they are able to track that you made a purchase and confirm with the company. They get a percentage of that money from the store since the customer (you) clicked on their link to that specific store. The best part is that they share some of the percentage with you. Check out what percentage you could earn back by clicking on the store's page on ebates.

Ebates website

Some stores that are included:
Sephora 8% cash back
Ulta 4% cash back
Dermstore 7.5% cash back (a coupon for dermstore came in MyGlam's March box!)
Old Navy 2% cash back

I'm not sure about you guys but I've made quite a few orders online and would have loved to hear about this site way before now. Hope it helps you guys too.
