Melissa's Review:

To Kill a Kingdom is a standalone novel that is a loose retelling of The Little Mermaid. It's much darker and has it's own twists and plot though. I kept seeing positive buzz and knew I had to grab this from my library when it came out. About halfway through I just went ahead and purchased the book since I enjoyed it so much. I very rarely reread books but this will probably be one of the few that makes that list.

The interesting twist in this series is that our leading lady, Princess Lira is a siren. The kind of siren that sings and lures their prey to their death. We pretty quickly find out what Lira does on her birthday each year, she takes a prince's heart as a trophy. Enter our sexy prince Elian, who hunts sirens, but is determined to find the one that killed his friend. Should I let you guess who the siren he wants is? Of course, it's Lira. Anyway Lira's mother, the Sea Queen gets pissed at something Lira did and turns her into a human with the challenge that she has to deliver Elian's heart to her by the winter solstice or stay human forever. This is the tricky part, Lira is going to have to be human and interact with Elian's crew and make them trust her without blowing her cover. And with that much time together still be able to take his heart so she could become a siren again. I could see the trust start to build and was questioning if she'd be able to break that trust to go back to her old life.

To Kill a Kingdom blew my expectations out of the water. I wound up really loving this book and hope to read something else by AChristo in the near future. For this being a debut novel I'm really impressed, there have been some really strong YA Fantasy novels coming out lately and it makes me so happy. If you're looking for a retelling that will steal your heart, grab this novel.
