Melissa's Review:

Red Queen is book 1 in the Red Queen series. I was looking through my library audiobooks and this one caught my attention, mainly because the cover. I'm glad I grabbed it though not sure if I'll check out the next book in the series. I tend to find YA books hit or miss and while this one didn't wow me it was a good read.

A little background if you're not familiar with this series. You have two types of people in this book's world, people with silver blood and then people with red blood. Those with silver blood have some sort of magical powers and are higher tier, while the red blooded people are typically servants/workers and very low tier. Our lovely leading lady, Mare Barrow is one of the red blooded people that winds up working at the Silver Palace after a chance meeting with a boy that has the ability to pull some strings. While being a server at one of the huge events, Mare winds up showing the world that she has powers much to her own surprise. At a loss, the Silver royalty tries to cover up the event by saying Mare is one of the lost silver princesses so the world doesn't riot at a red blood having powers. Mare's pissed at how everything is and teams up with the Red Guard, a militant resistance group that wants to take down the Silvers. Mare winds up engaged to one of the royal princes so she can remain under the King and Queen's thumbs but his brother is the one she has eyes for. As you can imagine, things don't quite go as planned and I was surprised at some of the twists and turns the novel took later in the story.

Red Queen is an interesting read that I think lovers of Dystopian YA will adore. I've read a few YA books quite similar to this one, though they didn't have the powers so that was a plus for this novel. I'll have to check out the reviews for the rest of this series to see if I think I'll enjoy the following books. Don't get me wrong though, this was a good read just not my typical genre I enjoy. I'm glad I tried it and I know a lot of you will love it!
