Melissa's Review:

Three Dark Crowns is book one in the Three Dark Crowns series. I typically don't read YA, but I'm so glad my BFF recommend this one to me! I had brought up that I didn't think I had read any books by Asian authors and she happened to have this one and suggested it. All I knew about this story going into it was that there would be three sisters that battle it out against one another to be instated as the Queen. What I didn't realize is how dark the book would be.

The story itself is told in a round robin type POV between the three sisters. We're introduced to each and how their different powers work and how they grew up. The strongest of the sisters is Mirabella, she's an elemental that is able to control the elements though struggles a bit with water. Then we have Katharine, a poisoner who is able to ingest poisons and is skilled at crafting the deadliest poisons. She's fairly weak in her powers though, when she eats certain poisons she tends to get violently ill. Lastly, we have Arsinoe, a naturalist who is able to help things blossom and also have an animal familiar. She's as weak as Katharine though, her familiar still has not shown and with the clock ticking closer to the time the sisters will start their battles she's becoming nervous. We don't actually get to see any of the sisters going after one another in this book, we just see their background stories of how each was raised and their powers as they are now. It does lead up to the moment where the battling it out can start so the next book should be a very interesting one.

Three Dark Crowns is an utterly captivating read. I kept wondering who would be crowned Queen only to realize near the end that this will be a series, I really should do my research before I start a book. That means I'll be needing the next book ASAP since this one was so good. It does end on a "say whattttt" type ending so I'll be interested in seeing what the next book holds. If you're a fan of darker YA novels I think you'd really enjoy this book!

  3. I'm used to books or movies where it's the brothers who are fighting to become a King, and this one screams girl power to me. I'll definitely check out this series though, I do have a time where I love to read dark books. Great review!

    1. I was thinking the same thing! It's normally the guys that are in these kinds of situations, it was refreshing to see the girls doing it :D

  4. Cliffhanger endings suck. Sometimes they piss me off enough that I won't continue the series out of spite. It has to be really good for me to continue.

  11. Haven't read this one but it sounds interesting! I like that the sisters share narrating duties and that it's in a round robin style. That usually makes for a fun read! Stinks that the sisters have to battle each other though. #getsocial17

  13. Definitely sounds interesting. The sisters with their different magics battling it out. Must be hard if they already know each other's weaknesses though. #GetSocial17
