Melissa's Review:

Pennies is book one in the Dollar series. I wound up grabbing this book as a freebie, though it looks like it's no longer on sale. It's well worth the $0.99 though! This is a very dark story of a girl sold into sex slavery. It's not my typical type of read but with all of the good reviews floating around I knew I had to read it. I wound up reading this in one sitting, it's an attention grabber for sure.

Our story starts with Tasmin Blythe attending a fundraiser for her mother. She's the pretty rich girl, you know the type. For that reason alone we find out she's strangled, then revived at the fundraiser and winds up being kidnapped to be sold to the highest bidder. The men change her name to Pimlico (the city where the fundraiser was held) and sell her to the highest bidder. He turns out to be a man named Alrik Asbjorn who immediately whisks her off to his house in Crete and locks her in to do whatever he wants. The story is told in a mixture of diary type entries as well as normal story line. It was an interesting touch and one I appreciated since the diary type entries held the more sinister type actions (rape, etc) so we didn't get a ton of details on that thankfully. Alrik basically keeps her there for two years at this point and while she might be subservient to him, she refuses to speak at all so she still has some control in that aspect. That pisses him off beyond belief so we do see some scenes of him abusing her due to that.

This is where our story gets interesting. Alrik invites someone over for dinner which he never does and gives Pimlico some clothing and expects her to act the part of doting girlfriend. Elder Prest is the guest of honor yet he somehow sees right through Pimlico's disguise and actually treats her like a human being. Though Pimlico still holds her silence, Mr. Prest is able to understand her body language and decode it somehow. It was an interesting turn and I hoped she'd somehow be able to get out from Alrik's clutches.

Pennies is such a dark story but utterly captivating. As I said earlier, I finished this book in one sitting which is something I very rarely do. I had to know what would happen to Pimlico and boy do I want the next book in the series right now. I never expected to wind up enjoying a book about a sex slave but it's so well-written that it's hard not to. If you're a fan of dark books, I think you'd enjoy this novel.

  1. I just gasped out loud seeing that your reviewed Pennies because I'm such a huge Pepper Winters fangirl. I just don't see many of those on the blogs I follow. The second book was great too, just a little different. And as always I feel the need to recommend Tears of Tess (that trilogy is my favorite by Pepper) ♥

  4. Oh wow... I would have thought it would be a hard one to read but if you are so captured by it, you know you made me curious. It is something I would usually be ticked about but I'd also be curious where the next book takes you.

  7. I grabbed this as a freebie too. I haven't read it yet, but have been wanting to read Pepper Winters for a while. I've read several authors in this genre. Kitty Thomas, Skye Warren, Aleatha Roming all write these kinds of books. They also have some freebies. I suggest you grab Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas. I would really be interested in hearing your thoughts. It is a similar kind of story. I'm moving this one up my TBR list.
