Melissa's Review:

Cinder is book one in The Lunar Chronicles. I feel like I'm the last person to read this series, but I'm so glad I finally picked it up. It has little bits of Cinderella inspiration mixed in and I was so happy to see that Marissa Meyer really made the story her own. Cinder lives in a futuristic city called New Beijing. She's a cyborg that works as a mechanic and lives with her stepmother and two stepsisters. As in the original, the stepmother is a horrible person but only one of the stepsisters is horrible, the other is quite nice so that was good.

Our story starts with Cinder working her repair stall at the market when the Prince (Prince Kai) comes to see if she can fix his android. Of course, she says yes but then things start getting a bit crazy in her life. Cinder's nice stepsister catches the illness that is killing a lot of people and is sent to the quarantines. Her stepmother is horrified and blames Cinder and sends her to be a guinea pig in attempts to find the cure. The doctor finds unexpected results when he runs some blood tests on Cinder. In the meanwhile, Prince Kai's father is dying from the illness with no cure in sight. Shit goes down and the Lunars come to Earth and decide to stay with Prince Kai. Queen Levana wants to negotiate a peace treaty and marry the prince. She definitely has ulterior motives and you can tell right off the bat she shouldn't be trusted.

There's so much going on in Cinder's book that it grabbed me from the start. I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook and even grabbed book two immediately. I will say this book doesn't really wrap up Cinder's story, it will continue probably throughout the series with mixed POVs. This is a really unique series and I'd recommend it to fans of YA and/or retellings.

  6. This is my favorite retelling too. Very unique yet she kept all the good stuff about Cinderella. I have to catch up with the rest of the books now that I'm back to enjoying YA.

  7. This is one of those series I am kicking myself for not agreeing to review when it first came out. I was just so swamped though. I do hope to pick it up in the future though. :)
