Melissa's Review:

Dark Heart of Magic is book two in the Black Blade series. The series revolves around Cloudburst Falls, a magical town where monsters that normally go bump in the night are living among the humans. There are several families with powers throughout the town, each seems to have a mafia type feeling. The two strongest families (the Draconis and the Sinclairs) seem to be ready to come to blows at any given time.

Lila Merriweather is a former thief turned bodyguard for Devon Sinclair. Lila's morning seems fairly normal, she heads to breakfast and grabs a large serving of bacon, then listens as the head of the Sinclair house announces the members to participate in the annual Tournament of Blades. Don't you know Lila's surprised when her name is called! The rest of the book revolves around the tournament's different challenges and the sabotage that seems to be happening during the event. There were quite a few twists and turns throughout the story, and the whodunit aspect was quite nice.

Dark Heart of Magic is a solid sequel in the Black Blade series. JEstep has a way of writing where you become so engrossed in the story. I was halfway through with the book and didn't even realize. The world and characters are engaging and there is romance building on the back burner. If you enjoy New Adult stories with paranormal tossed in, I think you'd love this series!

  6. Great review. Glad to see you enjoyed this one. I was not a fan of the first book. I was expecting some bad-ass chick and instead wound up with insta-love. :\ At least this one sounds like it has more action in it.
