A to Z - Jealousy

A to Z Challenge - J

Jealousy

Sooo... Jealousy in romance books. We've all seen it in books, and I want to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Check out our previous A-to-Z posts: G, H, I

I was struggling on what to make this post about, my boyfriend actually suggested I do a jealousy post. I'm going to run with it, since that is a somewhat prevalent element in the romance genre.

I don't think jealousy is all about the ladies though. Jerks and jealousy go hand in hand. I've seen it countless times where the guy is a jerk and it's all based on him being jealous and not wanting to admit it.

One of the books that comes to mind when the jealousy topic comes up is Beautiful Disaster. I really enjoyed the book, so don't get me wrong when I mention it. Travis does have personal issues, which you know if you've read it already. He's possessive of Abby and while they aren't dating and she's sort of seeing someone else he gets pissed, extremely pissed.

My question to you readers is do you like a jealous guy in books? Do you hate it? I want to hear your thoughts on the matter since it comes up in all the romance genres.

  1. Yay for the BF's suggestion!

Jealousy is cute, when it crosses the psychotic line is even better (in books only). You know I love romantic suspense and them cray crays!

I tend to like a bit jealousy in books too, if it's done well and not annoying that is lol

  2. I'm with Braine. I think a little jealousy on both characters parts is kinda cute. Like when it sneaks up on them and they say something nutty and get called on being all jealous and it totally surprises them. It can be kinda funny. But when it lands in the oh you're a nut job side of things I'm good skipping that.

  3. This is a complicated one to answer, my simple answer is no but yes, too. I think the whole jealousy thing is usually pretty unrealistic and strange in most books. The characters always get jealous of trivial and stupid things but when someones rubbing on their significant other, they're cool with it. Also, I think it sometimes makes a negative impact on the reader, like look at Twilight. People thought that type of relationship was okay. So, ya jealousy thing, not very crazy on it.

    1. I didn't consider that, if people consider that the norm and do it, that's no bueno.

    2. Ya, I didn't at first either to be honest, but then my mom made me watch Dr.Phil with her and it was on Twilight and those relationships. Lol.

  4. It depends for me but in most stories, I do like the jealousy bit. Depending on the writing, it can be the thing in the romance to get the story going.
