Belle Fabian aka Belle Fury is a well known ballet dancer. During a performance of Giselle, she feels the energy leaving her while dancing and sees the destruction it causes to the Metropolitan Opera House and the other dancers. She is scooped up by the Manhattan Ten, a superhero group, so she can learn to control her powers.

Red Ruin, a member of the Manhattan Ten is the one to help Belle take control of her power. He has a lot on his plate right now, but he can manage. I enjoyed Red Ruin's character, he was down to earth, likable and sexy. This installment in the series is a bit different from the rest. There isn't really a villain, it's more of a war inside Belle as she's coming to understand her powers. She doesn't want them, she just wants her normal life back. I think a lot of people would feel that way when faced with something unexpected that changes their life so dramatically. Though the story is about superheros, LDodge manages to mix in reality which makes it easy for anyone to connect/relate to the main characters. I really enjoyed Belle Fury, and can't wait for the next book in the series.

Drea's Review:

This fantasy world is at war and sorcerers are the most powerful weapons on the evil side. One kills identical twins Alexa and Marcel’s parents in front of them. Orphaned girls are sentenced to the breeding house—places that breed the king’s army. Marcel cuts Alexa’s hair and disguises her as a boy to keep her safe from that fate. Her fighting skill pushes her into a spot on the prince’s elite guard. But the prince is hiding countless secrets from his personal guard. Even his favorite—Alex. And these secrets could topple a kingdom. Or save it.

I’m not a big fan of fantasy but the blurb intrigued me so I grabbed it. I couldn’t put it down. The writing isn’t terribly sophisticated and the world isn’t groundbreaking, but the characters and story kept my interest. The author kept me guessing through most of it, which is difficult to do. I was a little frustrated with how many times we had to be reminded that it was so hard for Alexa to maintain her boy persona, but once we got past that part in the story, I really enjoyed it. I would have liked this even better if there’d been more of a resolution on the love triangle at the end. But the author has obviously ended it this way so she can have more than one book.

 photo 4star.png

Joanne Baldwin is a Weather Warden, she is able to control the weather and potentially lessen the danger in natural disasters. She is on the run to seek out Lewis, the most powerful warden alive in attempts to save her life. Ill Wind is a race against the clock, Joanne has to find Lewis and save herself before the other Wardens find her. There are more than a few bumps in the road for her.

The types of characters in Ill Wind was refreshing. I read a lot of Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy so all of the vampires and such can be tiring. There are Djinn and also wardens which control elements. The bulk of the story focuses on Joanne, so it's mainly full of weather wardens. Though a tad bit on the slow side when the book starts, it quickly progresses until you can't set it down. If you haven't read Ill Wind yet, I highly recommend it.

WoW [88] - Wicked After Midnight

Wicked After Midnight - Delilah S. Dawson
Release Date: January 28th 2014

A contortionist and a rakish brigand navigate the cabarets of Paris to rescue a girl taken by slavers in the third steampunk-tinged romance of the Blud series.

Life as a contortionist in Criminy’s Clockwork Caravan should be the height of exotic adventure, but for Demi Ward, it’s total dullsville. Until her best friend, Cherie, is stolen by slavers outside of Paris, and Demi is determined to find her.

On the run from his own past, Vale Hildebrand, a dashing rogue of a highwayman, hides Demi from the slavers…but why? He pledges to help her explore the glittering cabarets of Paris to find her friend, but much to Vale’s frustration, Demi soon attracts a host of wealthy admirers. The pleasures of music, blood, and absinthe could turn anyone’s head, and it would be all too easy to accept Cherie’s disappearance as inevitable—but with Vale’s ferocious will and Demi’s drive to find her friend, they soon have a lead on a depraved society of Parisian notables with a taste for beautiful lost girls. Can Demi wind her way through the seedy underbelly of Paris and save her best friend before she, too, is lost?

Why I am waiting:
The Blud series is an instant buy for me. I love the world building, the plot, the characters; pretty much everything about it. I can't wait to read Demi's story.

Evertrue - Brodi Ashton
Now that Nikki has rescued Jack, all she wants is to be with him and graduate high school. But Cole tricked Nikki into feeding off him, and she’s begun the process of turning into an Everliving herself... which means she must feed on a Forfeit soon — or die.

Terrified for her survival, Nikki and Jack begin a desperate attempt to reverse the process using any means possible. Even Cole, who they expected to fight them at every turn, has become an unlikely ally — but how long can it last? Nikki needs to feed on Cole to survive, Cole needs Nikki to gain the throne in the Everneath, Jack needs Nikki because she is everything to him — and together, they must travel back to the Underworld to undo Nikki’s fate and make her mortal once more. But Cole isn’t the only one with plans for Nikki: the Queen has not forgotten Nikki’s treachery, and she wants her destroyed for good. Will Nikki be forced to spend eternity in the Underworld, or does she have what it takes to bring down the Everneath once and for all?

In this stunning conclusion to the Everneath trilogy, Brodi Ashton evokes the resiliency of the human spirit and the indomitable power of true love.

Betting on You - Sydney Landon
Living the life of a rich socialite was never in Mia’s plans, much to the chagrin of her wealthy parents.
She’s made her own way, studying computer science at Brown and snagging a coveted position with Danvers International after graduation. Her plan to avoid parental involvement seems to be going well until her mother buys her a date at a charity auction—with the hot resort owner who she’s been eyeing on her latest work project.

Seth never mixes business with pleasure, but something about Mia drives him to distraction. Giving into his desires for just one night will hopefully clear his head enough to keep his hands off her during office hours.

But when one mind-blowing night turns into weeks of flirtation, frustration, and companionship, Mia realizes that their workplace fling may be developing into more—and that Seth might be the perfect man she’s been waiting for…

Dirty Magic - Jaye Wells
The last thing patrol cop Kate Prospero expected to find on her nightly rounds was a werewolf covered in the blood of his latest victim. But then, she also didn't expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of a Magic Enforcement Agency task force, who wants to know why she killed their lead snitch.

The more Prospero learns about the dangerous new potion the MEA is investigating, the more she's convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she's been wanting. But getting the assignment proves much easier than solving the case. Especially once the investigation reveals their lead suspect is the man she walked away from ten years earlier—on the same day she swore she'd never use dirty magic again.

Kate Prospero's about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should be never say never.

Mackenzie “Max” Miller has a problem. Her parents have arrived in town for a surprise visit, and if they see her dyed hair, tattoos, and piercings, they just might disown her. All her lies are about to come crashing down around her, but then she meets Cade.

Cade moved to Philadelphia to act and to leave his problems behind in Texas. So far though, he’s kept the problems and had very little opportunity to take the stage. When Max approaches him in a coffee shop with a crazy request to pretend to be her boyfriend, he agrees to play the part. But when Cade plays the role a little too well, they’re forced to keep the ruse going. And the more they fake the relationship, the more real it begins to feel.

Review: A Beautiful Wedding

Title: A Beautiful Wedding

 photo 5star.png

Abby Abernathy returns in A Beautiful Wedding, a novella that goes into more detail on how and why Abby and Travis got married. As a fan of Beautiful Disaster and Walking Disaster, this was a must read. Coming in at 160 pages, it's a decent sized novella, that filled in a few blank spots in their story.

The book starts with Abby and Travis directly after the fire at one of the fights. The point of view switches back and forth between Abby and Travis as the book progresses. The character's emotions are strong; the doubt, fear and need to protect shine through and make the characters life like. A Beautiful Wedding reminded me how much I enjoy JMcGuire's writing style and made me hope that one of the Maddox brother's stories will be released soon.

Drea's Review:

Sadie is going to win the top sales award this quarter if she has to personally sell all her competitor’s products to do it. But working with Aiden—the guy who broke her heart last year—will put her ambition, and her fragile heart to the test. Aiden never should have ended things with Sadie. She was the best thing he had going for him during a horrible time. Now that she’s back in his life—even if it’s just in a professional role—he isn’t going to miss the chance to woo her back.

I’ll start by saying I liked this book. Aiden and Sadie are complex characters with mostly believable backstories. And I liked how they tried to get a rise out of one another. The bit I found a little far-fetched was how a thirty-year-old, gorgeous blonde like Sadie could have managed to remain a virgin. And Aiden messing up at the end, yet again, was a little frustrating. But the writing was good and the storyline kept me going. I give this a solid 4* for the hot love scene (when we finally get it) and the happy pay off at the end. Aiden and Sadie deserve their HEA.

 photo 5star.png

Dirty Magic is book one in a new series by Jaye Wells. Kate Prospero is a cop fighting dirty magic in Babylon. After a traumatic event in her younger years, Kate swore off using magic and now is trying her best at cleaning up the streets. Always being passed over for promotions in her department, she jumps at the chance when she is offered a spot in the Magic Enforcement Agency task force. The task force's goal is to discover who is behind the new potion, Gray Wolf. The potion is turning people into beings that crave human flesh all while being immune to defensive magic. The deaths and serious injuries are building up, so Kate and her fellow MEA task force have to act fast.

The writing in Dirty Magic is superb. I've been eagerly waiting for another book by Wells since the end of the Sabina Kane series and this one definitely surpassed my expectations. The characters came to life as I read the story, and I had a hard time choosing which I liked best. The world building had me easily picturing what was going on. The plot itself has a bit of everything a reader could ask for, who-dun-it, an ex re-entering the picture, a race against the clock, and an evil villain. I'm really exited for book two, Cursed Moon and can't wait to see where the series goes next.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

WoW [86] - Crimson Veil

Crimson Veil - Yasmine Galenorn
Release Date: January 28th 2014

We’re the D’Artigo sisters: savvy half-human, half-Fae ex-operatives for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. My sister Camille is a wicked good witch with three gorgeous husbands. Delilah is a two-faced werecat and a Death Maiden. And me? I’m Menolly, a vampire married to a scorching hot werepuma. And right now, we’re facing enemies on all sides…

It’s been a long and devastating week. Back in Otherworld, war has decimated the elfin city of Elqaneve, our father has gone missing, and Shadow Wing has managed to obtain another spirit seal. On the home front, somebody burned down my bar, the Wayfarer, killing eight people, including a friend.

To make matters worse, we still haven’t found a way to stop Lowestar Radcliff—the daemon in charge of a supernatural corporate power grab. He’s attempting to awaken Suvika, the lord of vice and corrupt businessmen, and we have to stop him. Our enemies are closing in on all sides, and this time, there’s no place to hide.

Why I'm waiting:
I adore the Otherworld series by Yasmine Galenorn! I think one of the best parts of this series is that it's told in a round robin style. Each book's main character alternating between the three sisters, this one is about Menolly.

What book are you waiting for this week?

Drea's Review:

Maggie has a chip on her shoulder almost as big as the island she lives on. Having a father who was disappointed she wasn’t a son has turned her into a sarcastic, jaded workaholic. Yet she’s happy on her island with her airport and charter business because she has the family she’s picked.

P.I. Dex needs to find a wealthy family’s missing baby—a decades old cold case that could make his career. He’ll need prickly Maggie’s help to crack the secretive islanders and his case. Dex may discover more than a missing heir—he might find love.

The verbal sparring between the heroine and hero snagged my interest right away. Maggie’s backstory makes her strong, prickly character with a gooey heart believable and the father drama peppered in sells it. There’s several plots packed in here and most of it is resolved. Though we never meet Maggie’s mother. I would have liked to see a little closure there. And unfortunately we don’t discover who the missing baby is in this book. That plotline is stretched on into another book…maybe more. However that doesn’t take away from this story’s enjoyment. I give this a solid 4.5* for the sparring and hot love scenes.

 photo 5star.png

The Damsel and the Daggerman is the perfect start for 2014. I've read all of the Blud books so far, and the series just seems to get better with each book. This novella is a peek back at the travelling circus life and revolves around a new character, The Deadly Daggerman, Marco Taresque. He's sexy, and his origin is mysterious. His character is one that likes to be in control and he never misses his mark. I wouldn't quite call him shy or antisocial, but he likes to keep to himself.

Jacinda Harville, a journalist, enters the travelling circus with permission by Criminy to interview his people so she can write a book. Instantly intrigued, she focuses in on Marco and won't stop until she finds out the truth. The pacing and world building is spot on, and up to par with DDawson's full length books. I really enjoyed reading Marco's story, and hope to see him and Jacinda in future books. This series is a must read if you enjoy UF/PNR. If you haven't read the Blud series yet, pick up book 1, Wicked as They Come, I highly recommend this series.
