New Releases 07/01/2014

So many books are released this week! I picked a few that intrigued me or I'm eagerly awaiting.

Beautiful Oblivion - Jamie McGuire
Fiercely independent Camille "Cami" Camlin gladly moved on from her childhood before it was over. She has held down a job since before she could drive, and moved into her own apartment after her freshman year of college. Now tending bar at The Red Door, Cami doesn’t have time for much else besides work and classes, until a trip to see her boyfriend is cancelled, leaving her with a first weekend off in almost a year.

Trenton Maddox was the king of Eastern State University, dating co-eds before he even graduated high school. His friends wanted to be him, and women wanted to tame him, but after a tragic accident turned his world upside down, Trenton leaves campus to come to grips with the crushing guilt.

Eighteen months later, Trenton is living at home with his widower father, and works full-time at a local tattoo parlor to help with the bills. Just when he thinks his life is returning to normal, he notices Cami sitting alone at a table at The Red.

As the baby sister of four rowdy brothers, Cami believes she’ll have no problem keeping her new friendship with Trenton Maddox strictly platonic. But when a Maddox boy falls in love, he loves forever—even if she is the only reason their already broken family could fall apart.

In the first installment of the Maddox Brothers books, readers can experience the rush of reading Beautiful Disaster for the first time, all over again.

Night's End - Yasmine Galenorn
Eons ago, vampires tried to turn the dark Fae in order to harness their magic, only to create a demonic enemy more powerful than they could have imagined. Now, in a final push, Myst returns with a vengeance to bring the Golden Wood forever under the rule of the Indigo Court.

Newly crowned Fae Queens Cicely and Rhiannon have embraced their destinies and claimed their thrones. But Myst is rising once more, and now, at the helm of her armies, she begins her final assault on the Golden Wood. As Fae, vampires, and magic-born alike fall under the tide of blood, Cicely and her friends must discover a way to destroy the spidery queen before they—and their people—face total annihilation.

Fireborn - Keri Arthur
From New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur comes a brand new series featuring heroine Emberly Pearson—a phoenix capable of taking on human form, and cursed with the ability to foresee death…

Emberly has spent a good number of her many lives trying to save humans. So when her prophetic dreams reveal the death of Sam, a man she once loved, she does everything in her power to prevent that from happening. But in saving his life, she gets more than she bargained for.

Sam is working undercover for the Paranormal Investigations Team, and those who are trying to murder him are actually humans infected by a plague-like virus, the Crimson Death—a by-product of a failed government experiment that attempted to identify the enzymes that make vampires immortal. Now, all those infected must be eliminated.

But when Emberly’s boss is murdered and his irreplaceable research stolen, she needs to find the guilty party before she goes down in flames…

Then Came You - Jill Shalvis
Veterinary intern Emily can’t believe she wound up in the small town of Sunshine, Idaho, instead of the Los Angeles clinic she had always imagined. Now she has to put her plans to move to L.A. on hold for a whole year while she fulfills the obligation of her vet school scholarship.

Then Wyatt, her gorgeous one-night stand from a Reno vet conference, introduces himself as her new boss. And Emily is just as drawn to his seductive looks and quiet strength as she was on that very steamy night. She soon learns that Wyatt isn’t just a laid-back doctor, but a delicious alpha male tempting her away from her carefully laid-out plans...

Straddling the Line - Jaci Burton
Trevor Shay has it all—a successful football and baseball career, and any woman he wants. But when he finds out his college mentor’s daughter is in trouble, he drops everything to come to her aid.

Haven Briscoe has finally landed a dream job as a sportscaster for a major network. But she hasn’t been able to move past the recent death of her beloved father, and it’s affecting her career. A plum assignment following the daily life of sports superstar Trevor Shay might be just the inspiration she needs…

Trevor will do anything to spark life back into Haven, including letting her into every aspect of his world. The chemistry between them flames higher than one of Trevor’s home runs and faster than his dashes to the end zone. But as they grow closer, Haven stumbles onto Trevor’s closely guarded secret, one he’s hidden his entire life. And despite his protests, now it’s Haven’s turn to put everything on hold to help Trevor. Will he let her in and trust her with a secret that could blow his professional and personal world apart?

Born of Fury - Sherrilyn Kenyon
The war is on...

Hauk's enemies are legion, but he fears nothing and no one. He will do whatever it takes to survive and protect his Sentella brethren.

Sumi Antaxas is one of the best assassins the League has ever trained. In her world, failure is not an option and she has never met a target she couldn't execute. So when she's assigned Hauk, she believes it'll be a quick and easy mission.

But nothing is ever as simple as it seems, and Hauk is far better trained and skilled than his dossier shows. More than that, as she pursues him, she stumbles upon the key that will bring down not only Hauk, but the entire Sentella organization.

In the race to report her information, she is overtaken by enemies out to end her as effectively as she intends to end Hauk. Now her only key to survival is the one man she's been sent to kill. And Hauk doesn't trust her at all.

The only question is, will he help her to live... or send her to her grave.

In Your Corner - Sarah Castille
"You have to go. I won't be able to control myself. I've wanted you so bad for so long and after I've been in the cage...I can't think straight." He gives a guttural groan and his fist clenches on my hip.

Primitive. Primal. His need speaks to me. I tighten my grip on his neck and rock up to kiss him. He takes over. His kiss is hard and demanding.

"Mine." His voice is raw, savage and for a moment I truly believe he may lose control.

He rules in the ring

Two years ago, Jake and Amanda were going hot and heavy. But when Jake wanted more, Amanda walked away. Jake immersed himself in mixed martial arts, living life on the edge. But that didn't dull the pain of Amanda's rejection-until a chance encounter throws them together.

A high-powered lawyer, Amanda was a no-strings-attached kind of girl. But two years after her breakup with Jake, she still hasn't found anyone who gets her heart pumping the way he did. And then he shows up in her boardroom, hot as sin and needing help...

But can he rule her heart?

Jake is darker, sexier, and impossible to resist. As their chemistry builds, Amanda's not sure if she can stay in control, or if she's finally willing to let him claim her body and soul.

Never Been Kissed - Molly O'Keefe
Perfect for readers of Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Rachel Gibson, Molly O’Keefe’s second novel in her exciting new series—The Boys of Bishop—features an irresistible romance and unforgettable characters in a page-turning story that delivers equal parts emotion and humor . . . with a little edge to boot.

Holed up with Ashley in a tiny apartment over his brother’s bar in Bishop, Brody is tempted and torn in ways he never anticipated. Beautiful Ashley, vibrant despite her ordeal, fearless enough to love him beyond his wall of self-punishment, is now determined to save him. But with a little faith and a lot of love, they just may find happiness in each others’ arms.

In return, he pledged to live outside the law, protecting club members and their families, as well as keeping other MCs out of Skulls Creek. But when Cage discovers that a rival MC—one Cage has an all too familiar past with—plans to push meth into his town, he calls an old Army buddy turned private investigator who’s helped the Vipers in the past. Thanks to the phone call with Cage, Calla knows she’s formed a deep connection to a dangerous man.  She quickly discovers that although he may live by a different set of rules, Cage is an honorable man who wants to be more than her protector—if only she can accept his dangerous lifestyle.  But Calla comes to Skulls Creek with her own set of secrets…secrets that threaten to tear her and Cage—and the Vipers MC—apart.  As they put their newfound love to the ultimate test, Cage will risk everything he cares about to save her...

BLOODSHIFTED

Abducted by the vampire, Raven, Edie is taken to the catacombs beneath the Catacombs, an ironically-named L.A. night club that supplies fresh blood and other favors for its vampire Masters. Edie has no intention of swapping her nurse’s uniform for a cocktail dress—not when her newborn infant needs her. But if she and Asher—her shapeshifter fiancé—can’t figure out a way to bleed Raven’s power, they may never get out of this plasma-soaked pleasure palace…undead or alive.

Audio Review: Tangled Threads

Title: Tangled Threads
Author: Jennifer Estep
Release Date: April 26th 2011
Format: Audiobook
Source: Purchased
Buy: Amazon, BN

Gin Blanco returns in book four of the Elemental Assassin series. This time around Gin is toying with Mab, the fire elemental that murdered her family when she was a child. Mab is a formidable opponent, she has all the corrupt people in Ashland under her thumb. In an attempt to get rid of the thorn in her side, Mab hires an assassin to get rid of The Spider (aka Gin Blanco).

Gin doesn't just have Mab and the assassin looking for her though, Gin's little sister Bria is on the case trying to figure out who The Spider is and why she's picking off Mab's men one by one. Bria has a suspicion that The Spider is her long lost sister, but she isn't sure who that person is. Gin knows who Bria is, but cannot tell her the truth without risking losing her little sister just like how she lost Donovan Caine. I feel like Bria and Donovan have a lot in common, they're both honest cops that are dedicated to their job. I'll be interested to see what happens in the next book.

My biggest and only real complaint is that there was a lot of repetition in this book. I've had this discussion with a few authors in the past to gauge what people (readers) prefer, but I tend to like only a bit of refresher. I'm probably noticing it more so than most due to listening to the books one after another.

Gin's character is growing, she's not just a cold blooded killer compared to the previous books. She's learning new things about herself and facing tough decisions. She's still dating Owen Grayson, and as in any relationship their feelings for one another are growing. My main concern is that Gin will eventually push Owen away due to trying to protect him. That isn't an issue in this book really, and I'm hoping it won't be an issue later on in the series. I love pretty much everything about the Elemental Assassin series so far, and highly suggest it to any Urban Fantasy lover out there.

Drea's Review: Vixen in Velvet

Title: Vixen in Velvet
Author: Loretta Chase
Series:  The Dressmakers, #3
Format: ARC paperback
Release Date: June 24th, 2014
Publisher: Avon
Length: Novel (384 pages)
Genre: Historical Romance
Buy: AmazonBarnes & Noble
Rating: 4.5-stars

Drea's Review:

Leonie Noirot is all about numbers, plans, and designing the perfect corset. With her older sisters either ill with morning sickness or waiting in France for scandal to die down on a wedding trip, Leonie must keep their dressmaking business Maison Noirot afloat. And she has a plan to bring in even more business—advertisement at the one place all the impressionable young women will be at, a poetry reading by current darling Lord Swanton. The Marquess of Lisburne’s goal is to keep Swanton from the grabby hands of every eligible woman in Town. He spots Leonie at several events and is drawn to her no-nonsense attitude and the passion he spies beneath the prim woman’s surface. They strike a wager: Leonie will transform dowdy Lady Gladys into the belle of the ball and see that she has one serious marriage proposal within two weeks. If Leonie wins she’ll receive Lisburne’s most prized possession: a decadent Botticelli painting. If she loses, Leonie must spend two weeks sans business worries alone with Lisburne. Let the game begin.

This is the follow-up to the Scandal Wears Satin review from a few weeks ago. I had my doubts about Chase’s ability to turn a number crunching working woman into a heroine I’d actually want to read about, but she did it. Leonie wasn’t quite as sassy as her sister Sophy but she was still fun to read.

She’s meticulous in a slightly obsessive way and somehow that amused the hero. There was even a scene where he gets hot and bothered by her reading numbers from a ledger! I found myself chuckling and highly amused by that.

As with the last book I’d read in this series, the romance between Leonie and Lisburne flows naturally. There’s no rushing, no drawing it out. I wasn’t gnashing my teeth anywhere. The love scenes occur in the places they ought to, and they were steamy. No sex for sex’s sake in this book! And the side romance was almost as satisfying as the main couple.

Grab this one if you’ve ever wanted the prim accountant to land the hottest, richest guy around.

Challenge Update: This is book five toward the 2014 Historical Romance reading challenge I signed up for ages ago. I have seven more to go!

Eden is said to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her face has graced countless magazines and her body has sold millions of dollars of clothing. But her fame and beauty has earned her more than she ever imagined. Evil is stalking her, determined to extinguish the ethereal beauty forever.

Swanson or “Swanny” as his teammates call him is always up for the next mission. He came back from Afghanistan wounded and scarred. Hardly the kind of man who even belongs in the same room with Eden. And yet there’s something about the quiet beauty that stirs his blood and makes him dream of the impossible. Because Beauty loving the beast only happens in fairy tales and KGI doesn’t deal in fairy tales. Ever.

Until We Touch - Susan Mallery
After a family tragedy, former football hero Jack McGarry keeps the world at arm's length—a challenge now that his PR firm has moved to neighborly Fool's Gold, California.

Larissa Owens knows where she stands—Jack sees her as just another one of the guys. No matter what her heart wishes, Jack's her boss, not her boyfriend. But then Larissa's big secret is revealed…by her mother!

When Jack discovers the truth about Larissa's feelings, her touch suddenly becomes tantalizing, and he's not sure he wants to resist. But if he gives in to desire, heartache is sure to follow. Friendship or true love—will Jack go for the ultimate play?

Rusty Nailed - Alice Clayton
In this sequel to Wallbanger, the second book in the Cocktail series, fan favorites Caroline and Simon negotiate the rollercoaster of their new relationship while house-sitting in San Francisco.

Playing house was never so much fun—or so confusing. With her boss on her honeymoon, Caroline’s working crazy long hours to keep the interior design company running—especially since she’s also the lead designer for the renovation of a gorgeous old hotel on Sausalito. So with her hotshot photographer boyfriend gallivanting all over the world for his job, she and Simon are heavy-duty into “absence makes the heart grow fonder” mode. Neither has any complaints about the great reunion sex, though! Then Simon decides he’s tired of so much travelling, and he’s suddenly home more. A lot more. And wanting Caroline home more, too. Though their friends’ romantic lives provide plenty of welcome distraction, eventually Caroline and Simon have to sort their relationship out. Neither wants “out of sight, out of mind,” but can they create their own happy mid-ground cliché?

USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton delivers another delicious, frothy cocktail of a book, shaking up her characters, stirring in laugh-out-loud humor, and serving sizzling romance straight up!

To Marry a Scottish Laird - Lynsay Sands
Highlander Campbell Sinclair is no stranger to battle, so when he sees a lad attacked by bandits, he jumps into the fray. He didn't count on being stabbed. Grateful to the boy for nursing him back to health, Cam offers to accompany Jo safely to his destination. But when he accidentally comes across the lad bathing in the river, Cam discovers that Jo is actually Joan . . . with the most sinful of curves.

Joan promised her mother that she would deliver a scroll to the clan MacKay. But traveling alone is dangerous, even disguised as a boy. When a Scottish warrior lends his aid, she is more than relieved . . . until he surprises her with lingering kisses and caresses that prove her disguise hasn't fooled him. As their passion ignites, will the secrets of the scroll force a wedding . . . and lead to a love she's never known?

Better Homes and Hauntings - Molly Harper
When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate—he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in nineteenth-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”

But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself—while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.

But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

Holding Haley - Jill Sanders
Haley has waited her whole life for Wes. They were secret sweethearts all throughout school. But then he shocked her by joining the military, now it’s five long years later and just when she has finally decided to move on with her life, he strolls back into town, sexier than ever. But can she trust that he’ll stick around? She’s even more determined to make him work for her love.

Wes has had one thing on his mind since leaving town, getting back to Haley. Seeing everything he did over seas, has made him realize what he almost let slip through his fingers. Now all he wants to do is prove to her that waiting for him was the right choice.

The Saint - Tiffany Reisz
In the beginning, there was him.

Gutsy, green-eyed Eleanor never met a rule she didn't want to break. She's sick of her mother's zealotry and the confines of Catholic school, and declares she'll never go to church again. But her first glimpse of beautiful, magnetic Father Søren Stearns and his lust-worthy Italian motorcycle is an epiphany. Suddenly, daily Mass seems like a reward, and her punishment is the ache she feels when they're apart. He is intelligent and insightful and he seems to know her intimately at her very core. Eleanor is consumed—and even she knows that can't be right.

But when one desperate mistake nearly costs Eleanor everything, it is Søren who steps in to save her. She vows to repay him with complete obedience…and a whole world opens before her as he reveals to her his deepest secrets.

Danger can be managed—pain, welcomed. Everything is about to begin.

Something Sweeter - Candis Terry
The men in Texas are hard to resist...

Seattle event planner Allison Lane is an expert at delivering the perfect wedding—even if she might not exactly believe in the whole "'til death do us part" thing. When her father decides to tie the knot with a woman he barely knows, Allison heads to Sweet, Texas, to make sure his new honey is the real deal. What she didn't expect to find at the local honky-tonk was a sexy Southern man as bent on charming her pants off as he is on blowing her "true love doesn't exist" theory all to hell.

And they always promise...

Veterinarian, former Marine, and Sweet's favorite playboy Jesse Wilder takes one look at Allison and knows she's a handful of trouble he can't deny. But even after a sizzling kiss and obvious mutual attraction, it seems Allison has no such problem. When Jesse uncovers her sweet side, can he crush his playboy image, melt her cynical heart, and change her mind about taking a trip down the aisle?

The Secrets of a Scoundrel - Gaelen Foley
In The Secrets of a Scoundrel, New York Times bestselling author Gaelen Foley has created her most exciting Inferno Club novel yet!

Nick, Lord Forrester, has a reputation that is legendary—both as a lethal warrior and a wicked lover. But when his rule-breaking ways land him in a Scottish dungeon, he's left there to rot, until a mysterious lady visits his cell and offers him a way out.

All he must do is risk his neck on the mission she proposes—and obey her every command. One look at the luscious beauty has Nick ready to promise her anything, but he must resist his desire, or she could send him straight back to prison.

Virginia, Lady Burke, is well aware that the powerful ex-spy will try to take command of their quest, but it's her job to keep him under control. Yet how can she keep this untamable scoundrel under her thumb when all she really wants is to unleash the smoldering passion between them?

Vixen in Velvet - Loretta Chase
Lethally charming Simon Fairfax, Marquess of Lisburne, has reluctantly returned to London for one reason only: a family obligation. Still, he might make time for the seduction of a certain redheaded dressmaker—but Leonie Noirot hasn't time for him. She's obsessed with transforming his cousin, the dowdy Lady Gladys, into a swan.

Leonie's skills can coax curves—and profits—from thin air, but his criminally handsome lordship is too busy trying to seduce her to appreciate her genius. He badly needs to learn a lesson, and the wager she provokes ought to teach him, once and for all.

A great plan, in theory—but Lisburne's become a serious distraction, and Leonie's usual logic is in danger of slipping away as easily as a silk chemise. Could the Season's greatest transformation be her own?

Shaman Rises - C. E. Murphy
Joanne Walker has two choices:

Defeat the enemy…or lose her soul trying.

For over a year, Joanne has been fighting the Master—the world's most abiding evil. She's sacrificed family, friendships, even watched potential futures fade away…and now the Master is bringing the final battle to Joanne's beloved Seattle.

Lives will be lost as the repercussions of all Joanne's growth come to her doorstep. Before the end, she'll mourn, rejoice—and surrender everything for the hope of the world's survival. She'll be a warrior and a healer. Because she is finally a Shaman Rising.

Audio Review: Venom

Title: Venom
Author: Jennifer Estep
Series: Elemental Assassin #3
Release Date: September 28th 2010
Format: Audiobook
Source: Purchased
Buy: Amazon, B&N

Gin Blanco, a retired assassin named the Spider, returns in book three of the Elemental Assassin series. This time around, she's dealing with the consequences of her actions in book two. With a giant obsessing after a mutual friend, Gin is going to have to give it everything she has in order to save her friend and not expose herself all while somehow living to tell the tale. Add in that Gin's little sister that she thought died when she was a child somehow pops back into her life and this story just got that much more twisted.

The love interest, Owen Grayson had me pushing aside my intrigue/anger of Donovan Caine and rooting for Owen. I have mixed feelings for Donovan at this point, and I'm hoping he stays out of the picture. I'm almost certain JEstep is going to bring him back later on just to f*** with us though so we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Owen seems like Gin could rely on him for support as well as comfort and I can't wait to see where there relationship goes in the future books.

Jennifer Estep manages to weave such an intricate story that you're not sure where it's going to go, you just know you want to get caught in her web. The Elemental Assassin series is everything I could ask for in an Urban Fantasy series. I highly recommend it if you haven't read it yet! I'm already listening to the fourth book (audiobook) in the series.

Why I am waiting:
I'm so freaking excited about this book! I loved Beautiful Disaster and Walking Disaster and have been waiting oh so impatiently for this one. I can't wait to "meet" Travis's brother Trenton and hear his story.

Why book are you waiting on this week?

Drea's Review:

Karou was raised by monsters and now lives among the human world. She doesn't know what she is even though the question comes up weekly. Human, she thinks. But even as a human she's odd. Blue hair grows directly out of her head. Wished that way. And she draws sketches of fantastical creatures she claims are real. When she tells the implausible truth about her extracurricular activities gathering teeth for her guardian, she says it with a smirk so that no one is sure if she's fibbing or not. But time is running out for her guardian and when Karou meets a beautiful man with fiery eyes, she might finally discover what she truly is on the way to tracking down what happened to her guardian.

This title has been on my To-Buy shelf for ages so when I decided to try out a month of Audible, this is the first title I grabbed. I didn't know what to expect beyond YA. The official blurb really says nothing about the story. Not that mine is helpful either.

This takes the star-crossed lovers trope to the next level and twists it in a refreshing way.

What I liked: Karou is a sassy, kick ass heroine living in a lush world. She gets to travel to exotic locations as easily as walking through a door. She loves to draw. And she's been unlucky in her first love. The hero is tortured and laconic but inexplicably drawn to the heroine and she him. The story leaks bits of information you need to know as it goes, which is exciting and frustrating at the same time. Some of it is information Karou is learning for the first time and some of it is information the author is revealing to the reader.

There's loads of lovely description (though the author sure did like to use the word "beautiful" to describe her males) and we get to virtually visit several different countries, cities, and even worlds.

The narrator on this audiobook was entertaining with her different voices. I'm not sure I'd have been into this story quite as much if I'd been reading it instead of listening to it, so job well done for her!

What I didn't like: There's a load of time spent on character development prior to the real action. That gave us time to connect with kick ass Karou, maybe too much time. We don't meet the hero until quite a way into the story. Flashbacks are also prevalent and I'm not a lover of those. But worst of all? This ends on a cliffhanger (that you probably expect is coming). I'll admit I shouted at my car stereo when it got to the end.

Grab this if you want twelve hours of entertainment featuring an artistic girl who is about to have her world turned on its head.
