Drea's Review:

This fantasy world is at war and sorcerers are the most powerful weapons on the evil side. One kills identical twins Alexa and Marcel’s parents in front of them. Orphaned girls are sentenced to the breeding house—places that breed the king’s army. Marcel cuts Alexa’s hair and disguises her as a boy to keep her safe from that fate. Her fighting skill pushes her into a spot on the prince’s elite guard. But the prince is hiding countless secrets from his personal guard. Even his favorite—Alex. And these secrets could topple a kingdom. Or save it.

I’m not a big fan of fantasy but the blurb intrigued me so I grabbed it. I couldn’t put it down. The writing isn’t terribly sophisticated and the world isn’t groundbreaking, but the characters and story kept my interest. The author kept me guessing through most of it, which is difficult to do. I was a little frustrated with how many times we had to be reminded that it was so hard for Alexa to maintain her boy persona, but once we got past that part in the story, I really enjoyed it. I would have liked this even better if there’d been more of a resolution on the love triangle at the end. But the author has obviously ended it this way so she can have more than one book.
