Drea's Review:

Emma’s husband was killed a year ago, worse…his killer stole her family’s fortune. Now her father is wasting away and bills are piling up. Emma is out for revenge. Lord Lukas is hunting for the same man. Having her along would be a dangerous distraction, but alas, she has clues he needs to find his man…and hopefully his mother. But can he hide his dark desires from her?

If you’re looking for an erotic historical romance with a bit of bondage, pick up this novel. I like sexy times as much as the next girl, but since I grabbed this thinking it would be a standard historical romance, I wasn’t prepared for the amount of sex in it. That said, the scenes were hot. The heroine is also a bit of a saint. She puts up with far more from her hero than I ever would. In the end it pays off for her.

I’m harder on traditionally published novels than Indie. So since this one is a traditional book, it gets a 3.5* from me because Luke's tortured behavior went on a bit long.

Chat Review: The Cormorant

Series: Miriam Black 3
Format: eGalley
Release Date: January, 31, 2013
Publisher: Angry Robot
Source: NetGalley
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Purchase: Amazon | B&N | Kobo
Miriam is on the road again, having transitioned from "thief" to "killer".

Hired by a wealthy businessman, she heads down to Florida to practice the one thing she's good at, but in her vision she sees him die by another's hand and on the wall written in blood is a message just for Miriam.

She's expected...
 photo 5star.png
Miriam Black is a series I read along with Braine of TalkSupe. We both love Chuck Wendig's world building, unique characters and story in general. It's very Stephen King-ish in a weird, creepy way with a heroine who can tell to the detail how and when you're going to die with a single touch. That ability is sure to fluck up anybody and Miriam Black is definitely one messed up anti-heroine.

THE CORMORANT is book three of the series and it is far from drying up. This is a reunion volume because Miriam goes head to head against a pal she met in Blackbirds and after two books, we finally meet Miriam's mother who she claimed messed her up royally. Aside from the personal angle of THE CORMORANT, Miriam's powers is morphing into something else and the world of supernatural beings like herself seems to be growing. We're slowly learning where Miriam's gift is coming from and a glimpse of what role she's playing in the big scheme of things.

Overall Braine and I give THE CORMORANT 5 cauldrons/stars. This is one of the best Urban Fantasy series out there and we highly recommend it to fans of the genre as well as readers who like horror, thrillers and suspense. Miriam Black reads like a movie too and that's a great incentive for any book to have.

BRAINE: There are so many things in THE CORMORANT that had happened, so many developments I don't know where to begin! I honestly didn't read the blurb, I just added it to my TBR and requested for an ARC as soon as I saw it on NG. I have no idea where the story is going, all I know is it's going to be a winner. So overall, how do you feel about THE CORMORANT?

MELISSA: I wasn't sure what to expect this time, but I should have known Chuck Wendig wouldn't let us down. I loved it, Miriam's foul mouth and brutal honesty is always a treat.

BRAINE: Oh man! I can't help but laugh and be amazed by her comebacks! That girl has a quick tongue and a sharp mind! What was your favorite foul mouth line from her? Mine is:
I hope she gets bedbugs in her vagina. And they lay eggs. And she becomes the Mother of Bedbugs.
The visual of bedbugs crawling out of a woman's vagina is disturbing and hilarious at the same time.

MELISSA: I'd have to say one of mine was when she was talking to a guy eating a Luna bar and told him
Your man-boobs are going to grow lush and full of milk.
It made me chuckle because I know she tries to get reactions from people and most of the time they either ignore or get pissed off.

BRAINE: Miriam is no heroine and Chuck Wendig calls her an anti-hero and rightfully so. Her moral compass is skewed and her choices are limited to picking the lesser of two evils. I'm not surprised by with her character development although I'm shocked and a little disturbed with how her powers are growing.

MELISSA: I think you hit the nail on the head with that one, the options she has to choose from are not ideal but she has to choose. It's been awhile since we read book two, but I feel like she's changed a lot and is trying to be a slightly more mature Miriam. She's getting over the past and realizing things she assumed were true weren't quite how she believed. Her powers are growing and I'm kind of wondering where it's going to go. I feel like this time around we're left with more questions than answers on that aspect, which makes me want book four right now!

BRAINE: I agree 100%. That last bit where her powers just went ZOOM had my jaw dropping on the floor. I won't be surprised if she starts growing feathers and a beak next time around. Her powers went cray-cray here, makes me nervous a bit. Miriam may have this tough persona but she's very vulnerable and I know she'll be psychoanalyzing herself after this.

Thanks for the head's up about the villain btw. You're right, he's not as sinister as the others but dangerous nonetheless and a little slick, difficult to pin down. I'm happy that loose end got tied permanently though. What I find interesting is his powers and the implied thought that Miriam and other "gifted" people like herself are puppets of some sort. What do you think about all this higher power thing?

MELISSA: I'm hesitantly digging the higher power thing for right now, but I'm sure we'll learn more in book four, Thunderbird. I'm liking the fact that Miriam is finding more people with powers, while it's not shedding a ton of light on hers, it's leaving me really intrigued.

BRAINE: People with powers are cool but scary at the same time. I like how Miriam is this unique creature amongst monsters. Adding more people like her is going to change that dynamic and I'm not sure if I like that. I mean I'm sure CWendig isn't going to disappoint but still I'm still getting a kick out of these weird nemesis Miriam seems to keep crossing paths with.

The conflict had that back-to-basics thing going on for it. The kicker goes back to more people like Miriam. I just love the chase, the villain is slippery slick. Aside from that, I still like the conflict in Mockingbird better.

MELISSA: I think you're right on that, and I agree with liking the conflict in Mockingbird better. CWendig probably didn't want to punch our eyeballs with the over the top intense villain + more people with powers so he toned it down a bit while still making us want the villain dead.

BRAINE: I've always been curious about Miriam's family. One can't be messed up like that without some serious history and we got a peek of that in Mockingbird. Here we finally meet her mom and honestly she surprised me. I was expecting this deplorable mother and an overall horrible human being. I ended up liking her. Miriam got her spunk from her mom.

MELISSA: I thought her mom was going to be a horrible lady as well! I'm thinking Miriam being more mature or the fact that Miriam was gone from her Mom's life for that long caused one or both of them to be kinder to one another.

BRAINE: I miss Louis! His phantom doesn't quite cut it for me. I still want the real thing!

MELISSA: I miss Louis too! I got so used to his character being present in the books that I associate the two together.

BRAINE:  Would you let Miriam touch and tell you what she saw?

MELISSA: I totally would, as long as she made up a story if she saw cancer as my cause of death. Would you?

BRAINE: I think I would let her touch me too granted she'll be honest and won't tell me some BS thing.

So what are your overall thoughts about THE CORMORANT

MELISSA: My overall thoughts would be it's a fucked up thrill ride as usual, though a little tamer than the previous installments. I was left with quite a few questions which I hope we will find out more details in book 4, Thunderbird.

WoW [84] - How To Run With A Naked Werewolf

How To Run With A Naked Werewolf - Molly Harper
Release Date: December 31st 2013

Caleb Graham is a werewolf by nature, a tracker by profession. He uses his “extra gifts” to find people, and not always in the most legal or ethical manner. He doesn’t care what they’ve done, or who wants them found, as long as his considerable fee is paid. He likes his life simple and uncomplicated.

Anna Moder, former physician to Caleb’s pack, happens across Caleb during a particularly violent “negotiation” that has left him bloodied and unconscious. She helps him, despite the fact that he’s cost her a car, so he insists that she stay with him on the road for a while. As they grow closer, Anna looks past the gruff exterior and and the questionable job to thoroughly decent werewolf underneath.

Anna – who is careful to edit her involvement with Caleb’s pack from their conversations – doesn’t talk about why a nice girl wants to live in the middle of frozen nowhere, but she’s obviously on the run from something. When Anna’s past collides with Caleb’s current assignment from one of his sleazier contacts, Caleb finally has to make a choice—protect his job…or his potential mate?

Why I am waiting:
Oh Molly Harper, I love your writing. I can always count on it to make me laugh, all while wondering who the heck the bad guy is.

Drea's Review:

Vivienne’s family is in trouble. Her father is in danger of being sent to the poor house. Their only hope is for her to make a good match in wealthy prig John. But John is as disappointed in her as her father is. She has her work cut out for her. Vivienne discovers her beloved aunt is being blackmailed. She needs to help her aunt before she starts her new life. Vivienne’s neighbor and childhood friend Viscount Dashiell can help. But this rake can’t do it without getting a bit tangled with Vivienne—the only female he refuses to hurt. Dash could be the solution to all her problems if only he’d take the chance.

I enjoyed the heroine and hero in this novel. There was emotional growth on both their parts, albeit sometimes slow growth. They had believable history and affection that had me rooting for them. There were also loads of wicked secrets in this novel, and I wouldn’t call them little. Though I had some inkling what they were, I didn’t guess the majority of them. It’s hard to put one over on me, so that’s great! And in terms of writing, this is well written. Since this is a traditionally published book, and I wasn't absolutely wowed, I give it 4*.

Drea's Review:

Ixtab is the Goddess of Suicide—a totally bogus title for a woman who just wants everyone to be happy. Unable to touch anyone without them offing themself, she’s condemned to a lonely existence. Now she’s sent to help a physicist unlock the secrets of a tablet the gods need to stop the end of the world. Unfortunately Antonio is a dead ringer for the man Ixtab loved, and accidentally killed, two hundred years ago. Yet she can touch him without killing him. An accident nearly kills Antonio. The only fix is to turn him into a vampire—a monster. Now he wants nothing to do with the snarky female who ruined all his plans. But he also can’t keep away from her.

First, I read “Accidentally In Love with a God” right before this one (that was book one in the series, and this is book four). This book started off on a humorous note. I loved every time Ixtab went to an AA meeting and gave her spiel. The humor carried through the story, but some spots fell seriously flat or felt forced. This book didn’t have the yo-yoing problems of the last one in the series I’d read, so I didn’t want to strangle the hero for failing to make up his mind. We did have to wait an awful long time for his opinion of her to change, and it was related to seeing her face. That kind of bummed me out. Despite that, there was a fairly good HEA for these two. Still, I can’t bring myself to give Vampires Need Not Apply? more than 3.5* because it's a traditionally published book, and I only “Liked it”, I didn’t “Really Like It”.

Review: The Brazen Amazon

Title: The Brazen Amazon
Author: Sandy James
Release Date: May 6th 2013
Format: Ebook
Source: Author
Buy: Amazon, B&N
 photo 4star.png

The Brazen Amazon is book three in the Alliance of the Amazons series. This is probably my favorite book in the series yet, though I still have one more to go. I would suggest reading these in order, due to the books revolving around the four Amazons. Each book has one of the Amazons as the main character and you learn their story and how they met/end up with their love interest.

Gina Himmel, the Air Amazon is sent to San Francisco to protect a tech wizard. After shadowing him for a few days, she finally makes her move and we're introduced to Zach Hanson. A hunky, geek that makes groundbreaking technology that if it falls into the wrong hands could be catastrophic. He's a genius, and oblivious to almost everything else around him. After hiring Gina as his bodyguard, events start occurring that makes him realize he actually needs a bodyguard. The interaction between Gina and Zach kept my attention, I felt like they were drawn to each other and slowly realized they were meant to be together. Their characters really meshed well, without being a picture perfect Disney type of relationship.

The main character, Gina, is a strong character that I think a lot of people will connect with. She is more of a physically stronger type of woman but emotionally she still has hang ups from being teased/bullied as a child. It broke my heart when she was faced with that type of comments again in one of the scenes in the book. I'm just really glad that Zach was there to reassure her. She's still a tough lady though, don't get me wrong.

I'm not sure how, but Sandy James manages to mix in a bit of everything and make it work. I love the fight scenes and that the characters and world are fleshed out nicely. There's never a dull moment in the life of the Amazons and I can't wait to start reading book four, The Volatile Amazon. This series is amazing, and I highly recommend it.

WoW [82] - Reaver

Reaver - Larissa Ione
Release Date: December 17th 2013

WARRIOR OF HEAVEN

Reaver is an angel with a past, a record, and a less-than-heavenly attitude. Powerful enough to fight alongside the fiercest battle angels-and crazy enough to risk his wings on a one-way mission to hell-he's agreed to go where no angel has ever gone before...to steal the most seductive and dangerous prize of Satan himself.

ANGEL OF HELL

Harvester is one of the Fallen, a once-heroic angel who sacrificed her wings to work as an undercover agent in hell. But now her cover has been blown, and she's been doomed to an eternity of agonizing torture. Even if Reaver can snatch her away from Satan's lair, even if they can fight their way out of the underworld's darkest depths, there is one thing Harvester can never escape-her newfound thirst for an angel's blood...

Why I am waiting:
Yay! I can't freaking wait for Reaver to be released. This series is an instant buy for me, it mixes a bit of everything and the writing is always amazing.

Why did Abby pop the question?
What secrets were shared before the ceremony?
Where did they spend their wedding night?
Who else knew about it . . . and didn’t tell?

Everything about Abby and Travis’s elopement was top-secret . . . until now. Fans of Beautiful Disaster and Walking Disaster will get all of their questions answered in this whirlwind tale of the wedding day (and night!)—and as with all good stories, this one will definitely have been worth the wait.

Hunted - Karen Robards
’Twas the night before Christmas . . . and dozens of rich, influential hostages are trapped inside a sprawling lakefront mansion in New Orleans. The perp? Detective Reed Ware, model cop turned outlaw. After receiving a panicked call from Hollis “Holly” Bayard, a teenage street tough with a penchant for amateur sleuthing who stumbles upon the scene of a drug-deal-turned- murder, Ware finds his and his friend’s lives in dire danger. The crime Holly witnessed could be the biggest police cover-up this side of New Orleans—and no one’s talking. Driven to desperate measures to uncover the truth, Ware stages a coup at a Christmas party for the New Orleans elite, including the mayor, the council chairman, the sheriff, and the superintendent of police, who just happens to be hostage negotiator Caroline Wallace’s estranged father.

Cool, calm, controlled. That’s Caroline’s reputation. But when she’s brought in to talk Ware off the proverbial ledge, she realizes no amount of false promises is going to placate this man, who looks even hotter than he did years ago when seventeen-year-old Caroline tried to seduce him. It was his duty to protect her family then. Now it’s her turn . . . if she can think fast enough over the pounding of her heart.

When Caroline becomes wrapped up in the drama, it’s clear the sizzling tension she shared with Ware never let up. And the harder she tries to defuse the situation, the more she begins to wonder whose side she’s really on.

Blade to the Keep - Lauren Dane

A meeting of the Joint Tribunal, and Rowan’s new status as Liaison sends her straight to the last place on earth she wants to be—The Keep.

Raised at the knee of The First, honed into a weapon by the Hunter Corporation, wielding ancient knowledge from the Goddess within, Rowan must navigate around bloodthirsty opposition among Vampires and Hunters alike to avoid an all out war that puts humanity in the crosshairs.

And she’s got to do it as she attempts to manage a politically awkward romantic relationship with Scion Clive Stewart during a trip back to a place she escaped nearly fifteen years before. No pressure.

Walking the path between her two lives has already made Rowan a pariah. If she leaves it to become something even more Other, she may lose even the shreds of home she has left.

These Broken Stars - Amie Kaufman, Meagan Spooner
It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

When Karma writes you a ticket, pay up or else…

If life was like the movies, Jem Mitchell’s wouldn’t be such a mess. In LA’s glittering world of dreams, he works an unglamorous job at a gourmet grocery store. His past is so deep and dark, the details are lost even to him. All he knows is he was once cursed by a meter maid, and ever since, his love life has sucked.

When Detective Nick Davies becomes a regular at the store, Jem dares to hope he’s un-hexed at last. He should have known that sex with a remarkably normal guy, devoid of weird fetishes and fatal personality flaws, was too good to be true.

During a post-encounter cuddle, Nick recognizes the tattoo on Jem’s back—and remembers him as a young hustler he arrested nine years past.

As Jem’s memories come crashing back, he flees from Nick, but fate contrives to keep pushing them back together. And when Jem’s old partner in crime is found murdered, the stakes are raised for life, for love, and a dangerous drama with no guarantee of a Hollywood ending.

Warning: Stars a mild-mannered store clerk with a shady past, a hunky cop whose passion in the bedroom is as big as his passion for justice, and celebrity sightings you won’t see on TMZ.

Pandora is a Nephilim, she is half demon and has Lust inside her, literally. She has to appease her demon side every few days and feed Lust. Working at Carnivale Diabolique aka the circus of the damned gives Pandora easy access to what she needs. It also allows her fellow Nephilim to maintain their cover from the public eye. After all, who doesn't think circus folk are odd already? Each of the Nephilim have some sort of demon inside them that represents one of the seven deadly sins. I found this to be quite unique while reading and I could easily see those characteristics shine through in each character without it being overkill.

A Priest, the Nephilim's archenemy shows up and reveals he has been hunting Pandora. Their sole mission in life is to hunt and kill the Nephilim, so this is really bad not only for Pandora, but her fellow circus group. I'll forgive that he wants to kill her since he's a hunk and I was really intrigued with his character. I want to see more of him in book two.

Part of the major plot is that vampires are showing up more and more. Luckily Pandora is on the case to figure out why and to put aside her hatred for them in attempt to figure out the bigger issue at hand. The mystery element of the book kept me interested, but the love interest(s) really stole the show for me. It's not quite a love triangle, at least to me, but there is a definite possibility it could turn into one later in the series. Crimson Night was a quick read that I highly enjoyed. The characters were lively and up to par with MHall's other books. If you're looking for an edgy book that will keep you on your toes, you need to pick up Crimson Night!

Drea's Review:

Emma hears a voice in her head. It's a hot, demanding male who claims he's just trying to protect her whenever he tells her a guy isn't good enough for her. She wants rid of him and is willing to do anything to make that happen. Even travel to Mexico to free him from some magical prison. But when her "Guy" turns out to be a god, Emma's life will never be the same.

This heroine had me laughing at the start. Unfortunately, though the story is fairly solid all the way through, the humor petered off for me. Humor is so hard to keep going through an entire book, so it's understandable. The hero's yo-yoing, supposedly for the heroine's sake, drove me a bit bonkers. I probably would have given this a higher rating if it hadn't been for that (or if the humor had carried through to the end). Though there is plenty of reason for both characters to whine, we don't get much of it. And last, but not least, we get a nice resolution at the end.  Mechanics wise, the writing is good. So this get's a solid 3*.
