Review: Chasing the Shadows
Author: Keri Arthur
Series: Nikki & Michael #3
Release Date: September 24th 2013
Chasing the Shadows is book three in the Nikki & Michael series. The book can be read as a standalone, but I highly suggest you read these in order. If you choose to read them out of order, you will miss out on what happened between the two main characters, how they got together, their previous missions, etc. Anyway onto the characters.
Nikki is restless just sitting around waiting for Michael to come back from missions he deems too dangerous for her to tag along. So when Jake, her former boss that is recovering from injuries, calls to see if she wants to help him out on a case, she jumps at the chance. Michael just so happens to be selected to go on a mission only to find out that Nikki is already in that area and on the same investigation. They join forces exactly like in the previous books, but this time it is to find out why rich women are being kidnapped and brutally murdered even though their spouses pay a ransom.
Michael is a vampire that works for the Circle. Most of his missions are dangerous, he has to investigate and take out paranormal killers. I'll be honest in this book, Michael is a little bit thickheaded when it comes to relationships. He wants to protect Nikki, but doesn't think about what she wants or how she wants to be treated. He's a little bit like a caveman, which I understand and forgive since his character is 300+ years old, it did get on my nerves a little bit though.
The bad guy(s) in this book are a little bit more intense this time around. The women that are being abducted and held for ransom, are found in a desolate place raped and with severe physical injuries. While it doesn't go into great detail on the torture, there are enough details that will make some people slightly uncomfortable.
All in all, I enjoyed the cat and mouse aspect and felt that this installment was a tad more gritty than the other books. Chasing the Shadows is the strongest of the Nikki & Michael series so far and I really enjoyed watching their characters grow. I suggest this series if you're a fan of Urban Fantasy with a dash of Paranormal Romance.
