Review: Eternal Rider

Photobucket
Title: Eternal Rider
Author: Larissa Ione
Series: Lords of Deliverance #1
Rating: 5/5

Eternal Rider is a fantastic read that left me needing to read book two (Immortal Rider). I'll start by letting you all know that you do not have to read the Demonica series to understand what is going on. It might be helpful, but I had no issues and this is my first time reading a Larissa Ione book.

The series revolves around the four horsemen, Ares (War), Limos (Famine), Thanatos (Death), and Reseph (Pestilence). Eternal Rider focuses on Ares who is trying his hardest not to let his seal break and start the Apocalypse.

The story is told in Cara's (Ares' potential love interest) point of view. Cara saves a hellhound and finds herself surrounded by things she never knew existed. Ares comes to her rescue and you can see the sparks fly. Ares is written to be a gorgeous hunk of man, but you can tell he isn't used to having someone to care for much less someone caring about him. This leads to an interesting relationship where you can see the feelings but they aren't spoken until necessary.

I don't want to give too many spoilers, so I'll keep the review short. All you need to know is the book was excellent and if you enjoy paranormal romances at all this is a must read.

TBR Thursday [21]

Here are the next two books on my TBR list. What books will you be reading next?

Word and Breath - Susannah Noel

Riana has learned how to stay out of trouble. She spends her days studying written texts in the government’s Office of Readers, and she spends her nights taking care of her sick sister. She always—always—follows the rules. Despite her low profile, she has mysteriously become a target. Someone has kidnapped her sister. Someone else is trying to kill her. And someone has sent a Soul-Breather to beguile her out of her secrets.

Her help comes from the mythic leader of an underground rebel movement. A man who used to be her friend. A man who has silently loved her for years. He disappeared from her life without a word, and now he expects her to trust him again.

Then there’s the Soul-Breather, a man who can taste her spirit with only a touch. He makes her feel things she’s never experienced before, but she doesn’t know if the feelings are real. Hired to deceive and betray her, he offers to help her instead.

Without both men, she can’t rescue her sister. And she can’t discover the world-changing knowledge—buried in her memory—that has made her a target in the first place.

Valley of Dust - Karoleen Vry Brucks

Even as a little girl, Selene had always been adventurous, climbing trees and finding new adventures in every nook and cranny. She was never accepted by either gender—all children thought she was too outspoken and strange. Little did she know how different she truly was until an encounter with a mysterious stranger changes her life forever. Readers can witness the intriguing events unfold in Valley of Dust, a novel by Karoleen Vry Brucks.

From the moment that Lucian saw Selene, he knew she was special and that she was his destiny. He sent his brother, Anton, out to watch over her and protect her while she was still unaware of her true nature. Lucian, however, didn’t foresee that Anton and Selene would be mutually attracted to each other. Will Selene come between the two brothers? How will she handle the truth about what she is and the power that courses through her veins? Readers can unravel the exciting answers as they explore the Valley of Dust.

Review: Spellbound Falls

Spellbound Falls Reviewer: Melissa Mason
Title: Spellbound Falls - 1st in the Spellbound Falls series
Author: Janet Chapman
Publisher: Jove
ISBN-13: 9780515150360
Release Date: February 2012
Genre/Sub-genre: Contemporary Romance
Year/Setting: Present day/Spellbound Falls, Maine
Overall Rating: 4.0
Sexual Content Rating: Subtle/Sensual
Language (Profanity/Slang) Content Rating: Mild
Violent Content Rating: Negligible/Minimal
Janet's Website/Blog: www.janetchapman.com

Olivia Baldwin is a widowed, single mother that lives in Spellbound Falls, a small town where everyone knows each other. She helps her mother-in-law run Inglenook, a camp that advises single parents on how to better connect with their children. On a run to town to purchase a water tank with her employee there is an unwanted romantic advance and a stranger comes to her rescue.

The stranger is a handsome, protective man named Maximilian Oceanus. He is arriving at Inglenook early to get extra face time with the staff. There is definitely more than meets the eye with Max. His character is an old fashioned type of man that is protective of people he cares for. My first thought was if Olivia didn't want him I'd be glad to take him off her hands.

I felt that the romance aspect of Spellbound Falls is true to life since Olivia is a widowed single mother. She is guarded and isn't really looking for love. The relationship between Olivia and Max builds slowly and there were a few bumps in the road.

Spellbound Falls has a little bit of everything, so all readers will enjoy this book. There is a sweet yet hesitant romance, some magic and mythology, and several twists and turns in the plot that I did not see coming. The characters are interesting and made me not want to put the book down. I recommend this book if you like a little bit of magic in your romance.

Review: Boyfriend from Hell

Boyfriend from Hell
Title: Boyfriend from Hell
Author: Jamie Quaid
Series: Saturn's Daughter #1
Photobucket

Justine Clancy (aka Justy/Tina) works part time doing accounting in The Zone, and is a college student working towards becoming a lawyer. The story starts out with a bang (literally) when her boyfriend crashes her car into a bank and almost kills her. Not sure who or what to blame for his death she wonders if she had anything to do with it. Her words directly before the crash were damning her boyfriend Max to hell.

Tina never really thought of all the weird things that happen in The Zone, caused by a chemical spill. Flying gargoyle statues, an invisible thief, and buildings that glow are just some of the weird events happening. When her mousy, thin hair randomly turns into lusious, full locks she knows something weird is going on. Finding out she is one of Saturn’s daughters changes everything. She is able to dispense her own form of justice. With someone gunning against her, she has to be careful who she trusts since thugs in suits are tailing her every step.

There wasn't much of a romance aspect in this book. I didn't like Max at all. On the other side, I couldn't really figure Andre (Tina's boss) out. I kind of hoped they would get together, even if Andre seemed like a Casanova. I could feel the chemistry between them. Tina pretty much did things nonstop, so honestly she didn't have very much time for a relationship.

Boyfriend from Hell was a great read with a story outside the box. I recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal books that aren't the same old plot.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher for an honest review.

Review & Interview: Knight of the Dead

Knight of the Dead

Title: Knight of the Dead
Author: Jennifer Rae Gravely
Format: Ebook - Review Copy
Buy Link: Amazon, B&N

Photobucket

Knight of the Dead is a light, entertaining read that I could not put down. The book starts out with Persephone asking a car insurance company for the check that she is due. After being rejected she rushes back to the daycare that she works at. I felt bad for Persephone in the beginning of the book. She has trouble making ends meet and will be evicted if she cannot find enough money to pay the rent that is due.

Mark, a single father and businessman with a hectic work schedule needs someone trustworthy to look after his daughter. When he picks up his daughter at the daycare he sees how well Rose responds to Persephone, and asks her to babysit his daughter while he works. She quickly agrees, and starts taking care of Rose on a regular basis.

The relationship between Persephone and Mark builds slowly, and is true to life. There are bumps in the road, misunderstandings, and even a scheming lady trying to break the two apart. I highly recommend this book, and cannot wait to read more of Jennifer Gravely's work.

Interview

I loved the book so much that I asked Jennifer to do an interview. I hope you enjoy finding out a little bit more about her.

1. Do you have anything in common with your characters?
You’d probably be able to tell if you met me more than once, but I love to change my hair color, and I mean drastically. From blond to a deep red mahogany, and even to an orange creamcicle color—sigh—I found myself with the other day. Thus, my heroines tend to have the flavor of the season too. For instance, Persephone, from Knight of the Dead, has long, wavy deep red mahogany hair to match my color this past winter when I was writing the romantic suspense. Today I’m a brunette, and my newest heroine Randi has the same light brown color.

In addition, Persephone and Mark both like basketball, and I live for sports. However, Persephone’s propensity for accidents kept her from participating, whereas I lettered in three sports in high school and played volleyball in college with zero trips to the emergency room in my career as an athlete. Also like Persephone, I waited tables before returning for my teaching certification. And who doesn’t need money!

2. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
Being a perfectionist, I’m sure I could find minor details and images to tweak, but overall I’m pleased with the story and the characters’ development.

3. When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always loved words. As a child, I earned the nicknames motor-mouth and jabber jaws for my love of talking and telling stories. Later, as an avid reader, I wrote mainly to analyze. A triple major in history, politics, and English at Converse College, I viewed life in terms of paper topics! Still, I played with writing short stories and poetry. Then life took over—I became a wife, mother, teacher, and coach—and even though I continued to read, I rarely wrote anything creatively.

About ten years ago, some teacher friends and I were talking about books and decided to try to write our own. One friend found her groove with the challenge, and has had numerous novels published. I spent years on two connected novels, both still looking for the right home. However, at the encouragement of my friend, I tried once again to write a novel. I choose the name Persephone for my heroine because I teach mythology, and used the tale as a springboard.

4. What genre of books least appeals to you and why?
Other than sports related books, I’d have to say non-fiction or anything overly technical. The older I get, the more I read for entertainment rather than information. As an owner of a pack of house beagles as well as a couple of porch cats, I also will stop reading a book if animals are mistreated, or die.

5. If you were stranded on a desert isle, what five things would you want to have with you?
Sunglasses, coffee, paper, a pen, and my feather pillow. Sounds like paradise to me!

Thank you for stopping by, and don't forget to check out my giveaway going on this week.

WoW [28] The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling

Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine. Find out more information at their blog http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/.

Title: The Casual Vacancy
Author:  J.K. Rowling
Publisher: Little, Brown Book Group
Release Date: September 27th 2012

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.

Why I am waiting:
I'll be honest, I really want to read this just to see how she changes from the Harry Potter world to an adult book.

Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn’t . . .

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she’s still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. And yet . . . for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

Cursed - Jennifer L. Armentrout

Dying sucks-- and high school senior Ember McWilliams knows firsthand. After a fatal car accident, her gifted little sister brought her back. Now anything Ember touches dies. And that, well, really blows.

Ember operates on a no-touch policy with all living things--including boys. When Hayden Cromwell shows up, quoting Oscar Wilde and claiming her curse is a gift, she thinks he's a crazed cutie. But when he tells her he can help control it, she's more than interested. There's just one catch: Ember has to trust Hayden's adopted father, a man she's sure has sinister reasons for collecting children whose abilities even weird her out.

However, she's willing to do anything to hold her sister's hand again. And hell, she'd also like to be able to kiss Hayden. Who wouldn't? But when Ember learns the accident that turned her into a freak may not have been an accident at all, she's not sure who to trust. Someone wanted her dead, and the closer she gets to the truth, the closer she is to losing not only her heart, but her life. For real this time.

Stormdancer - Jay Kristoff

A DYING LAND
The Shima Imperium verges on the brink of environmental collapse; an island nation once rich in tradition and myth, now decimated by clockwork industrialization and the machine-worshipers of the Lotus Guild. The skies are red as blood, the land is choked with toxic pollution, and the great spirit animals that once roamed its wilds have departed forever.

AN IMPOSSIBLE QUEST
The hunters of Shima’s imperial court are charged by their Shōgun to capture a thunder tiger—a legendary creature, half-eagle, half-tiger. But any fool knows the beasts have been extinct for more than a century, and the price of failing the Shōgun is death.

A SIXTEEN YEAR OLD GIRL
Yukiko is a child of the Fox clan, possessed of a talent that if discovered, would see her executed by the Lotus Guild. Accompanying her father on the Shōgun’s hunt, she finds herself stranded: a young woman alone in Shima’s last wilderness, with only a furious, crippled thunder tiger for company. Even though she can hear his thoughts, even though she saved his life, all she knows for certain is he’d rather see her dead than help her.

But together, the pair will form an indomitable friendship, and rise to challenge the might of an empire.

Glass Heart - Amy Garvey

Wren can do things that other people can only dream of. Make it snow on a clear, crisp day. Fly through an abandoned tunnel. Bring a paper bird to life.

Wren knows her abilities are tinged with danger—knows how easy it is to lose control—but she can't resist the intoxicating rush. And now that she has Gabriel by her side, someone who knows what she can do—what she has done—she finally feels free to be herself.

But as Wren explores the possibilities of her simmering powers, Gabriel starts pushing her away. Telling her to be careful. Telling her to stop. The more he cautions her, the more determined Wren becomes to prove that she can handle things on her own. And by the time she realizes that Gabriel may be right, it could be too late to bring him back to her side.

Review: Backstage Pass

Photobucket
Title: Backstage Pass
Author: Olivia Cunning
Series: Sinners on Tour #1

Photobucket

Myrna, a college Human Sexuality professor is thrilled to see the members of Sinners after speaking at a seminar. She talks with the members for awhile and invites Brian, the lead guitarist back to her room so she can take care of him. Little did he know that she just wanted to nurse him back to health after his drinking binge. The next morning when they both wake up it gets freaking hot. While having sex, Brian starts humming and asks for something to write on. Not finding anything, he writes his new riff on her back and later shows his band members. This pretty much cements Myrna's place of being with Brian and around the band.

The sex scenes are all scorching, but I found it a little bit repetitive with Brian scrambling for a piece of paper and a pen to write a song. The story revolves around Myrna and Brian, but includes the rest of the band as well, since most of the book is while they're at shows, on the bus, at a hotel, etc. It is well written and was one of those books where I had to read it in one sitting. I fell in love with the characters and had to know more.

I suggest this book if you like erotica, and rock stars.

This is my stop for The Grimm Chronicles book tour presented by Innovative Online Book Tours. My post will feature a review of the book, and a giveaway.

Title: The Grimm Chronicles
Author: Isabella Fontaine & Ken Brosky
Buy Link: Amazon
Rating: 4/5

The Grimm Chronicles is a refreshing set of books that were a great read. The books revolve around Alice Goodenough, a high school student that volunteers at the library during Summer. Alice finds out she is the hero that fights againts the Corrupted. The Corrupted are characters that the Brothers Grimm wrote about and came to life. With Briar Rabbit at her side, she has information and the back up she needs.

The characters are ones we all know, but they have a twist since they are Corrupted which makes the story unique. A few that make appearances are Prince Charming, Cinderella, Frog Prince and quite a few more. Each story leads into the next so make sure to read the books in order. The 3rd Episode was a little bit different from the rest. A Corrupted actively seeks out Alice, and her life quickly changes. All in all the books were excellent, I recommend them and will be on the lookout for more.

BLURB:

Why I am waiting:
A lot of people love this series so I read book 4. That book wasn't all that great, but I loved the humor in it. I still need to read the rest of the books to see if that helps me understand everything. This one will be on my TBR list until I read the rest of the series since it looks good.

Review: Beneath A Rising Moon

Photobucket
Title: Beneath A Rising Moon
Author: Keri Arthur
Series: Ripple Creek Werewolf #1
Photobucket

Neva Grant is a werewolf on a mission. Her twin sister, Savannah was one of the women attacked by a crazed killer, but unlike the others she is still alive. Neva's plan is to continue her sister's detective work and find out who is behind the murders. She goes into the Sinclair mansion while they are having a dance (where werewolves go to find a partner) and is determined to dance with Duncan Sinclair so she can gain access to the mansion. Neva's plan works, but the attacks continue happening and Duncan is suspicious of her motives.

Neva and Duncan want the same thing, to figure out who is behind the murders. I wasn't sure if they would work well together, but they proved me wrong and worked as a great team. Beneath a Rising Moon has the whole Romeo and Juliette vibe going on. Neva's father is against the dance and only believes that wolves should have relations with their soul mate. Duncan is a former playboy and used to have a different dance partner at every turn.

The relationship between Neva and Duncan started off on a purely sexual basis then slowly morphed to a sweet romance. Duncan's suspicion of Neva causes distrust in both parties. I found myself rooting for their relationship since it seemed they had so much against them.

I recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal books that have a who-dun-it aspect.

I have a love/hate relationship with anthologies. I tend to buy them because [insert author name here] is in it and I love her/him. Sometimes it leads me to find new authors, which I love. On the other hand it's hard for some authors to write a good short story so the quality that author writes at normally might not be shown.

What is your take on anthologies? Leave your link to your answer or comment below.

TBR Thursday [20]

Here are the next two books on my TBR list. What books will you be reading next?

Photobucket Boyfriend from Hell
They say justice is blind. But Justine isn’t.Justine (Tina) Clancy is just an ordinary law student with a faulty arrest record, a part-time job in Baltimore’s radioactive Zone, and a family secret so bizarre even she doesn’t believe it. That is, until in a fit of fury she damns her boyfriend to hell—and it’s exactly where he ends up.

Much to her surprise, Tina is apparently one of Saturn’s daughters, with the power to wield vigilante justice. But poor Max didn’t deserve to go up in flames, even if he did almost run her over with her own car. Tina’s convinced someone cut the brakes—and now a relentless nemesis is stalking her through the Zone’s back alleys, where buildings glow, statues move, and chemical waste exposure comes with interesting consequences. Tina’s usually a loner, but now she needs a posse like no other: a shape-shifting kitten, an invisible thief, a biker gang, a snake-charming private detective, a well-meaning cop, and her sleazy, sexy boss. But in between freeing Max from hell, saving her own neck, and solving a mystery that threatens the Zone and her newfound friends, how is she ever going to study for finals?

Photobucket Immortal Rider
Sexy, powerful, and immortal, Limos is on a crash course with destiny. She’s been marked as Satan’s bride and her jealous fiancé wants her all to himself. The only way this Horseman can keep herself—and everyone else—safe is to keep her distance. But not even Limos can save herself from the secrets she’s kept . . . or resist the seductive allure of one very brave human.

Arik Wagner knows the saying “love hurts” better than most, yet he never thought stealing a kiss from Limos would land him in Hell. Literally. It takes all his military training to survive the demon torture, but once he’s topside, Arik realizes that the agony has just begun. With the Apocalypse looming and Satan demanding his bride, will Arik and Limos surrender to the desire smoldering between them? Or will giving in to their passion unleash hell on earth?

Title: Forbidden
Author: Jacquelyn Frank
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Release Date: October 30th 2012

From New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Frank comes this first book in The World of the Nightwalkers—an exciting and sensual new spin-off series in which the Bodywalkers, an ancient race of the night, battles the evil forces who prey on them.

The unexpected happens in an instant. On her way to work, secretary Docia Waverley hurtles into a crashing crossroads, and she quickly begins to suspect that things will never be the same. Then, when a tall, blond, muscular stranger intervenes on her behalf, telling her it is his duty to protect her at all cost, what is just a feeling turns to proof positive. That is, as long as Docia’s savior doesn’t turn out to be a crazed kidnapper.

When Ram finds Docia, he has no doubt that she is his queen. But as this golden warrior sweeps in to protect her, he feels something more than body heat every time they touch. He is overwhelmed by a searing connection that goes deep into the twin souls inside him. A desire rises in him that is forbidden—this woman is his queen, the mate of his king, his leader, his best friend. And yet Docia is so vulnerable and attractive that she awakens a hunger in Ram that is undeniable, a carnal craving he cannot yield to . . . not without risking the very survival of the Bodywalkers.

Teaser Tuesday [21]

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week’s teaser comes from “The Grimm Chronicles” by Isabella Fontaine & Ken Brosky:

"Any character from the Grimm fairy tale becomes Corrupted over time because they don't belong in this world," Briar explained. "They're people, only they ain't like you." He chuckled. "Sorry, sorry. I'm getting worked up and letting my accent show. I don't mean to offend."
