Dead on the Delta by Stacey Jay

TN Dead on the Delta

Goodreads Blurb

Once upon a time, fairies were the stuff of bedtime stories and sweet dreams. Then came the mutations, and the dreams became nightmares. Mosquito-size fairies now indulge their taste for human blood—and for most humans, a fairy bite means insanity or death. Luckily, Annabelle Lee isn’t most humans. The hard-drinking, smart-mouthed, bicycle-riding redhead is immune to fairy venom, and able to do the dirty work most humans can’t. Including helping law enforcement— and Cane Cooper, the bayou’s sexiest detective—collect evidence when a body is discovered outside the fairy-proof barricades of her Louisiana town.
But Annabelle isn’t equipped to deal with the murder of a sixyear- old girl or a former lover-turned-FBI snob taking an interest in the case. Suddenly her already bumpy relationship with Cane turns even rockier, and even the most trust-worthy friends become suspects. Annabelle’s life is imploding: between relationship drama, a heartbreaking murder investigation, Breeze-crazed drug runners, and a few too many rum and Cokes, Annabelle is a woman on the run—from her past, toward her future, and into the arms of a darkness waiting just for her. . . . Review: A Touch of Greek

Title: A Touch of Greek (Out of Olympus #1)
Author: Tina Folsom
Rating: 3/5

B&N Link

Triton, the son of Poseidon is a playboy. He is well known for his trysts with women. Even women that are with someone else fall for his charm and gorgeous looks. Triton is caught with Zeus's mistress and given two choices of punishment. He can choose from living on the mortal realm until he finds someone to love him for who he really is, or he can go to Hades for a few years. Little does Triton know how his choice will affect him for the rest of his life.

Sophia is trying to take control of her life after her aunt's death. She is starting up a B&B and has quite a few obstacles. After having an accident she has to rely on someone for help. Will Triton and Sophia fall in love while the Gods are plotting against them?

There is a slight whodunit aspect to this book. A few accidents seem to pop up during the renovation of the B&B. At first I wasn't sure if they were intentional, or accidental. A little bit later in the book it cleared that right up for me.

I love the Greek mythology aspect of this book. I haven't read very many books that include the actual lives of a God so I really enjoyed those parts. However, I did feel that some of the plot was slightly predictable. I only say this because I have read numerous romance novels, but it is pretty much the same basic plot that is in almost all of the other romance books. While that did take away a little bit of the impact for me, I felt this was a pretty solid book that romance readers will enjoy.

Warning:
There is sexual content in this book.

Review: Fire Baptized

Title: Fire Baptized
Author: Kenya Wright
Rating: 4/5

Amazon e-book
Amazon Paperback
B&N Paperback

Author's website

Fire Baptized is an intense book which is dark and gritty but still a fantastic read. From the very beginning of the book you are faced with real life situations such as shop lifting, murder, drug usage, and the list keeps going.

Lanore, a mixed breed, is walking home one day only to witness a murder. The killer sees her and brings her into a twisted game. Will Lanore be able to figure out who the killer is before it is too late? Or will the body parts keep adding up at her apartment? This is a deadly game that she cannot afford to get wrong.

Lanore has an interesting power that I don’t see very much in books. She has control over fire; she can harness fire from a nearby source (candle, etc.) or make it herself. Lanore can take care of herself, she is not afraid to use her power if she needs to. The book makes a few references to her hiding her power from others so she can use it as a surprise attack if needed. MeShack, her roommate, is part were-cheetah. He has trouble keeping his form when emotions are at a high. Zulu’s orgins I do not want to ruin for you guys, so you will have to read the book to find that tidbit out.

There is quite a bit going on in the book. MFE is fighting for Mixies rights, since mixed breeds are second class citizens. Lanore is attending college, she will be the first Mixie ever to have gotten a degree if she is able to pass. The murderer is keeping tabs on Lanore, and leaving her little notes and bodies at her apartment. She is also trying to keep up and figure out who the killer is before he/she gets to her first.

There is a love triangle in the books, which is fine by me, but will annoy some readers. Both of the men sound pretty sexy, and they both have alpha male personalities. MeShack is her childhood friend that she lives with and used to date. Zulu is the leader of MFE, the organization for Mixie rights that Lanore helps. They each have their own strengths and I will be interested to see which man she winds up with.

The book is pretty well written, and it kept my interest. I think my favorite part of the book was the fact that I was unable to tell who the killer was while reading. All in all, I am happy that I got the chance to read this book. Thanks you Kenya Wright for sending a copy to review!

To participate in the meme all you need to do is:

This week's question:

Who is your favorite flawed hero and/or heroine and why do you still love them despite their faults?

Sabina Kane is my favorite heroine that is flawed (book 1 of the series is Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells). Sabina starts out not quite sure where she fits in since she is half vampire/half mage. Her Grandmother is the head council member for the vampires. And let's just say the vampires and the mages do not get along... You see Sabina struggle to understand who she is and she overcomes a lot of her misled beliefs throughout the series.

Teaser Tuesday [6]

2. Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week’s teaser comes from “Blackbirds” by Chuck Wendig:

TN Blackbirds
"She sees death everywhere. Everybody dies, just like everybody poops. This guy's no different than anybody else (except, a little voice says, the part where he gets stabbed in the eyes with a rusty fish-gutter and he says your name before getting his brain skewered), so why should she care?"
~Chapter 5 - unsure of the page number (reading Galley via ebook)

Today is the release day for Blackbirds. Show it a little love by buying a copy if you think the above teaser is interesting. It has profanity, and violence, so be warned if you do not like to read that type of content! The main character, Miriam, can touch anyone and she will see how they will die. Death isn't always pretty and this book shows you that. It is really interesting so far and a fairly fast read. Can't wait to finish it to see what happens.

Thoughts so far:
Miriam doesn't take crap from anyone. The start of the book fascinates me, and if the rest is anything like it, this is going to be finished in a day or two. While this book is dark, it revolves around death, it is worth reading if you're okay with that type of content. I have to mention this, the cover art is so gorgeous.

Review: Darkness Rising

TN Darkness Rising

 Book: Darkness Rising
 Arthur: Keri Arthur
 Rating: 4/5

This is book two of the Dark Angels series by Keri Arthur. If you have not read book one feel free to check out my review of it here. This series is one that you need to read the books in order to fully understand what is going on.

Risa and the gang are back and ready to kick some butt. Risa is mourning the loss of her mother and trying to find her killer. Her father is still in the picture trying to get her to search for the keys. Everyone is still looking for Risa, her father, and the keys. Madeline Hunter, the leader of the vampire council wants Risa to research a case, with deadly consequences if she refuses or fails. This is a typical Keri Arthur book, you will love it if you like her other work. There is strategy, fight scenes, strong friendships/family, and of course surprises.

I would have to pick Smoky from Yasmine Galenorn's Otherworld/Sister's of the Moon series. Smoky is sexy, and smart, and a dragon, and did I say sexy? *fans self* I don't want to steal the picture but you can look at him HERE.

Thoughts so far:
So far this book is excellent. It exceeded my expectations and I expect to finish this pretty fast. It is one of the most interesting books I have read so far this year. I have noticed something odd though, I bought this book on my nook and I'm having weird font issues. The font coloring is really pale black, like it is faded. The font type is small and really skinny so it is hard to read. If you find this happening to you, try bumping up the font size, it helped me slightly.

Review: My Life As a White Trash Zombie

TN MLAAWTZ

Title: My Life As a White Trash Zombie
Author: Diana Rowland
Rating: 5/5

Goodreads blurb:
Angel Crawford is a loser

Living with her alcoholic deadbeat dad in the swamps of southern Louisiana, she's a high school dropout with a pill habit and a criminal record who's been fired from more crap jobs than she can count. Now on probation for a felony, it seems that Angel will never pull herself out of the downward spiral her life has taken.

That is, until the day she wakes up in the ER after overdosing on painkillers. Angel remembers being in an horrible car crash, but she doesn't have a mark on her. To add to the weirdness, she receives an anonymous letter telling her there's a job waiting for her at the parish morgue—and that it's an offer she doesn't dare refuse.

Before she knows it she's dealing with a huge crush on a certain hunky deputy and a brand new addiction: an overpowering craving for brains. Plus, her morgue is filling up with the victims of a serial killer who decapitates his prey—just when she's hungriest!

Angel's going to have to grow up fast if she wants to keep this job and stay in one piece. Because if she doesn't, she's dead meat.

Literally.

Let me start this review out with the fact that Diana Rowland is a genius. I absolutely loved this book, and wonder where the heck I've been, since I haven't read her other books yet. The cover art is gorgeous, the book is well written, and I want the second book NOW. Why do you tease me with a second book that is not released yet? Why?!

Angel Crawford starts the book out as a washed up, pill addicted junkie. She finds herself in the hospital with no clue how she got there, much less what happened. She remembers being in a car crash and blood everywhere, yet there is not a mark on her. When it comes time for her release from the hospital she finds that a mystery person leaves her a care package and a strange note. She is told to go to a job interview the next morning to be a driver for the Corner's Office.

Angel lands the job, and much to her surprise she is picking up dead bodies and helping out with autopsies. Her character begins to grow, I could tell that Angel wants to keep her job and tries to make good decisions. It is pretty hard on her in the book since her father is an alcoholic, and treats her like crap most of the time. There is also the small matter of a serial killer is on the loose and chopping off people's heads. All of this is going on while she is struggling to learn what it means to be a zombie. It seems there isn't a handbook for being a zombie so Angel is not quite sure what she needs to do. She has no clue if she needs to eat brains daily, if she should eat normal food, etc.

There is a little bit of a romantic interest in the book that was slightly too fast paced for me. Basically towards the end of the book there is a guy that Angel will get chummy with. I won't say who it is since that is a surprise, but it just felt really rushed since it doesn't develop until the very end.

All in all this book is amazing and I highly recommend it!

The first thing I would buy would be a house, so I wouldn't have to put up with the silliness that my apartment managers create. In several of the rooms I would have floor to ceiling book shelves. And of course, books to fill the shelves. Other than that I'd probably invest and save some of the money for taxes (it's the accountant in me) haha.

What would you guys buy?

Title: Night Seeker
Author: Yasmine Galenorn
Release Date: July 3rd, 2012

Pages: 336 (Paper back edition)
Publisher: Berkley

Eons ago, vampires tried to turn the dark Fae to harness their magic, only to create a demonic enemy more powerful than they could have imagined. Now, the Vampiric Fae are on the move, hunting anyone in their path. As the war with the vampires ratchets up, Myst, Queen of the Indigo Court, enshrouds New Forest in her chilling grasp.

Cicely Waters, owl shifter and Wind Witch, has rescued the Fae Prince Grieve at a great cost. Their reunion has lost them the allegiance of the Summer Queen — and the tolerance of the vampires. In desperation they turn to the Consortium for help. Now, to regain the good will of Lainule, they must dare to enter the heart of Myst's realm. But as Cicely and Grieve embark on their search for the heartstone of Summer, Winter is already wreaking her terrifying revenge. (-Goodreads)

Why I am waiting:
I love the way that Yasmine Galenorn writes. It always keeps me at the edge of my seat wanting to know more. Her books normally have a female lead that has to solve important issues, and kick a lot of butt. This series has fae, vampiric fae, shape shifters, witches, etc. It is jam packed full of interesting characters. I will warn you that Galenorn is not easy going on her characters, they have to work for everything. I find this refreshing, since fairytale style books where the main character gets whatever they want bug me. If you do not like gritty, and sometimes dark books this possibly will not be the book for you.

Yasmine is having a giveaway of this book right now on her website.

April 2012 Birchbox

Hi lovely people! I received my April Birchbox see below for detailed descriptions/review.

What was in my April box?
1. tarte LipSurgence lip tint
2. MicrodermaMitt Body Mitt
3. Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream
4. Marula – The Leakey Collection™ Omega Rich Pure Marula Oil
5. Wonderstruck Taylor Swift Perfume

Reviews
1. tarte LipSurgence lip tint
  • I have used tarte's LipSurgence products before and loved it. I was very happy to see this full sized item in my box this month. It was in a shade that I would not normally purchase for myself, but it is so gorgeous on. Thank you for sending a color I wouldn't normally purchase.
 2. MicrodermaMitt Body Mitt
  • I was slightly surprised to see this in the box this month. My boyfriend's sister got me an Asian product that is similar to this for Christmas and it felt like it was yanking my skin off. I was slightly hesitant to use it, but I guess I'm a glutton for punishment. Much to my surprise this product is much gentler on my skin, and left it soft and smooth. Now if I could just keep it away from my boyfriend... He loves these types of products, but you didn't hear it from me.
 3. Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream
  •  I was excited to see this since there is a patch on my elbow that continues to be dry and try to crack. I immediately put it on that spot and I noticed it did not feel like it was dry and about to crack the next day. That is a huge win in my book. The scent on the other hand is quite bad, so I'm not sure if I should purchase this since it smells bad.
 4. Marula – The Leakey Collection™ Omega Rich Pure Marula Oil
  • I love getting oil since I would never buy it for myself. I always worry that if I put oil on my face it will make my face oily and break out. This product did not break me out or make my skin oily.
 5. Wonderstruck Taylor Swift Perfume
  • My first thought was "oh man, I see this everywhere I should try it". I tried it, and it actually smelt decent. I then wore it for about 30 minutes (possibly less) and went to smell it again and it was GONE. How a perfume fades that quickly I have no clue. I would not purchase this if I was in love with the scent since the scent fades way too quickly.

For the girls wondering what the heck Birchbox is, it is a monthly subscription box that sends out 4-5 deluxe sized products (sometimes full sized). The tarte product alone (retails for $24) was over the $10 I spent on the box. I won't lie to you and say that every month is like this, but I have had quite a few boxes that I loved and they all seem worth over the $10 I spent.

If you are interested in getting a subscription please click on my referral link HERE.

PS: You can check out my other Birchbox boxes from previous months by clicking on the "Birchbox" label below.

Thoughts so far:
This is book two in the Dark Angels series. So far I have had trouble putting down the book. It is really good, just like Arthur's other books and I want to read it super fast. Risa is still being followed by people that are searching for her father and they all want to know where he had the keys hidden. I don't want to go into more detail in case it gives some spoilers. Discount Armageddon Review

Photobucket

Book: Discount Armageddon
Author: Seanan McGuire
Rating: 3/5

Goodreads blurb:
Ghoulies. Ghosties. Long-legged beasties. Things that go bump in the night... The Price family has spent generations studying the monsters of the world, working to protect them from humanity-and humanity from them. Enter Verity Price. Despite being trained from birth as a cryptozoologist, she'd rather dance a tango than tangle with a demon, and is spending a year in Manhattan while she pursues her career in professional ballroom dance. Sounds pretty simple, right? It would be, if it weren't for the talking mice, the telepathic mathematicians, the asbestos supermodels, and the trained monster-hunter sent by the Price family's old enemies, the Covenant of St. George. When a Price girl meets a Covenant boy, high stakes, high heels, and a lot of collateral damage are almost guaranteed. To complicate matters further, local cryptids are disappearing, strange lizard-men are appearing in the sewers, and someone's spreading rumors about a dragon sleeping underneath the city... (-Goodreads)

Verity Price, a cryptozoologist, hunts monsters that go bump in the night. Not every monster though, just the naughty ones that cause havoc in society. Verity comes from a long line of cryptozoologists which a few generations back broke from the Covenant, a group that believes all non-humans are evil and need to die.

The book started out strong and made me have high hopes that it would be excellent. Roughly halfway through I ran into a snag that I could not get over. The snag that I am speaking of is that one character was basically brainwashed into believing something their whole life. Yet that character changed their lifestyle / beliefs at the drop of a hat. I do not believe that could happen in most cases. I would have liked to see a progressive change throughout the book, not a I woke up and am a different person today type of change.

Another issue I have with the book is that it is full of monster names (ex: ahool, johrlac, etc) that the reader will get easily confused or not able to keep straight. I read the whole book and struggled somewhat only to find out there is a monster glossary in the back of the book. Why is this not in the front of the book?! I assume that most people are like me and do not read the back of the book first. I would have loved to reference the glossary while reading, but it is too late now.

The book is highly entertaining and worth reading, especially if you are into the kick butt females and paranormal characters. If you do decide to read this book, remember to look in the back if you get confused on what *insert monster name* is.

This week's question:

Now that Lover Reborn has come and passed, what book are you most looking forward to?!

Here is one book that is on my TBR pile that looks promising!

PhotobucketTitle: Dark Descendant
Author: Jenna Black

"From the acclaimed author of the Morgan Kingsley, Exorcist books comes the gripping first novel in a new series about a private eye who discovers, to her surprise, that she’s an immortal huntress.

Nikki Glass can track down any man. But when her latest client turns out to be a true descendant of Hades, Nikki now discovers she can’t die. . . .

Crazy as it sounds, Nikki’s manhunting skills are literally god-given. She’s a living, breathing descendant of Artemis who has stepped right into a trap set by the children of the gods. Nikki’s new “friends” include a descendant of Eros, who uses sex as a weapon; a descendant of Loki, whose tricks are no laughing matter; and a half-mad descendant of Kali who thinks she’s a spy.

But most powerful of all are the Olympians, a rival clan of immortals seeking to destroy all Descendants who refuse to bow down to them. In the eternal battle of good god/bad god, Nikki would make a divine weapon. But if they think she’ll surrender without a fight, the gods must be crazy. . . ." (-Goodreads)

TN Blue-Blooded Vamp

Title: Blue-Blooded Vamp
Author: Jaye Wells
Release Date: June 1st, 2012

The epic conclusion to the amazing Sabina Kane urban fantasy series.

Sabina Kane is on the hunt. Her prey: Cain, the father of the vampire race and the one who murdered her family and her friends. Unfortunately, Cain is hunting Sabina, too.

The one man who holds the key to defeating Cain is, of course, Abel. A mage with secrets to spare and, hopefully, the power to match it. Unfortunately, for Sabina, he's in Rome and may not want to be found.

Sabina sets out for Italy with her friends, Giguhl and Adam Lazarus, to track down the only man who can get her the revenge she hungers for. But will he help her or oppose her? And just who is Abel, really? Worst of all, when Sabina figures out the goddess Lilith has a plan for her-she realizes this trip is getting deadlier by the minute. As they say: when in Rome-SURVIVE. Why I am waiting:
I am in love with this series. It has engaging characters that I could not easily forget. Sabina is a kick butt character that I love to read about. Wells incorporates things into the books such as fight club, or even roller derby, which I find amazing. It keeps my interest and makes me want to know what shenanigans the characters will be up to. I am extremely sad that this is the last book in the series, and hope she launches a new series soon.

If you like this series you should preorder your copy! Barnes & Noble | Amazon

If you want signed copies of previous books in her series, check out this book store (they ship!): A Real Bookstore

Teaser Tuesday [3]

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week’s teaser comes from “My Life As a White Trash Zombie” by Diana Rowland:

"Now that I was fairly sure that I wasn't an axe-weilding murderer, what I gave a crap about was the fact if the head was missing, so was the brain. And I was hunnnnnngry, damn it!"

Currently Reading [3]

My Life As a White Trash Zombie by Diana Rowland

Photobucket

Thoughts so far:
Angel wakes up in the hospital with no clue what happened. All she knows is that a mystery person instructs her to go to the corner's office in the morning to get the job they lined up for her. I can only assume she is the zombie, and it will probably be a pretty fast read since it is really interesting so far.

Look for tomorrow's blog post for a teaser of this book.
