Interview and Giveaway with R.L. Naquin

Monster In My Closet

The awesome RL Naquin is here to answer a few questions. She is so sweet, she will be giving away a copy of her book on my blog!

Melissa, thank you so much for having me here on your blog. I love what you’ve done with the place! Very chic.

Do you have anything in common with your characters?

No. Absolutely not. There is no part of me in any of my characters. Friends and family keep saying I am Zoey, but that’s ridiculous. What do they know? My mom, especially. It’s like she’s never even met me.

Okay, fine. Maybe Zoey is a little like me.

Honestly, Zoey comes from a lot of my own experiences as a magnet for people with problems. Perfect strangers do, in fact, walk up to me, unload their troubles, and walk away. In the two minutes it took for a new pizza guy to hand me pizza through the door and take my money, he told me all about the problems he was having with his roommate. I swear, all I said was “Hi” before he let it rip. I guess I just have a sympathetic face. I don’t know.

Zoey’s fashion sense comes from my daughter, though. I do not own a beret or butterfly tights.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I’m writing book three in the series now, so there are a lot of little things coming up that I wish I could tweak as I find out more about the world of the Hidden. Since I can’t change anything in book one to suit new ideas in later books, it’s a challenge to make the pieces fit as seamlessly as possible. It’s a fun challenge. It keeps me on my toes.

No book will ever be perfect. I will always find things that are wrong, sentences I’d like to rewrite, typos that got missed by me, my editor, and my copy editor. All I can do is accept that I’ve done my best and hope that I’m becoming a better writer with each book. I can’t pull a George Lucas and go back to book one for a rewrite after I finish the series. That’s not cool.

How did you decide on the types of characters to include in your book? (Skunk ape named Iris!)

My goal in these books is to surprise you with something you didn’t expect. I could have gone with Bigfoot, but skunk-apes are their lesser known cousins, and they have the stink factor, which makes them more interesting. Mind you, there aren’t a lot of Bigfoots (Bigfeet?) in urban fantasy, so I was already doing something weird.

I scour conspiracy theory websites and read a lot of fairy tales and folklore looking for mythical creatures and urban legends. I’m always looking for creatures nobody is expecting.  I might throw in a vampire or a werewolf somewhere down the line, but there are so many other things lurking in the woods. I want to tell you about those guys in my books.

Any hint on future characters to come?

Well, the next book—out next March—is called Pooka in My Pantry. So, right there is a huge hint. Pooka’s are very bad luck, so Zoey’s in for some trouble from Silas, especially since she’s the only one who can see or hear him. And speaking of luck, she’ll also be having a run-in with the Leprechaun Mafia. They’re taller than you’d expect and not very pleasant. Sea serpents. Sharks. Gremlins. If you watch carefully, you might even see a unicorn. Zoey’s problems have only just started.

Thanks again for having me over and chatting with me, Melissa. It’s been a lot of fun!

Thank you! Feel free to come back anytime.
