Review: Lore vs. The Summoning

Lore 1

Title: Lore vs. The Summoning
Author: Anya Breton
Series: Lore #1
Buy Link: Amazon
Rating: 4/5

Lore vs. The Summoning is a book full of whodunit, action and fighting. The main character Lore, is a woman with interesting powers and is a force to be reckoned with. The daughter of Apollo is blessed with the power to heal, plague (kill), and slow time down when she is in a dangerous situation (like a bullet coming at her). It all starts with a sexy vampire asking Lore to look into the small matter of a mystery person trying to summon a demon. There are tons of bumps and twists along her journey to the truth. Not to mention all the kick butt fight scenes.

The romance aspect is different from most books. Lore is an equal opportunist, she has never really been into women before, but there is one that she has a weak spot for. If that is not your cup of tea, continue on your merry way. There is also a male romantic interest that I am interested in seeing how and if it continues. I'm not quite sure who I'm rooting for to win Lore's heart, book two might change my mind depending how the characters continue to grow.

Disclosure: I won this book by guessing "carnival". My review is honest and all opinions are my own.

There's nothing Maddie loves more than fabulous vintage clothes, but the visions she gets while touching them are starting to wear her down. Even so, when a beautifully dressed girl comes to Vintage Magic in search of  her past, Maddie isn't about to turn her away, especially since she bears a striking resemblance to her good friend Dolly Sweet.

Why I am waiting:
I really do not read mystery books very often. Every now and then I crave a different genre to read, and when that happens mystery tends to satisfy me. Toss in a little bit of paranormal and I'll read it.

Book Trailer: http://youtu.be/moTRG6bfK8E

Excerpt:
When he heard her, he came to her, took her into his arms, and kissed
her. It was a comfort that he wasn’t regretting their lovemaking.
She didn’t think she could handle being rejected by him twice in her
lifetime.
“Do you have to leave soon?” she asked.
“I’m sorry. I don’t want to, but I have to.” He went to the stove
and prepared her a cup of coffee. “I think we should start planning our
wedding. We could be married at Christmas.”
She was taken aback. Is this his proposal? This was supposed to
be so romantic and memorable, not talk about planning a Christmas
wedding while he stirred a cup of coffee.
“Do you even want to get married?” She took the coffee mug he
offered. “I mean, it wasn’t that long ago that you told me you weren’t
sure you ever wanted to be married again. You said you didn’t see
fatherhood in your future, and Nick, I want a baby…more than one. I
grew up as an only child and I was so alone. I don’t want my child to
have to experience that.”
“Well, I didn’t use a condom last night. You could be pregnant right
now,” was his reply.
Heaviness descended upon her heart. This was so not how she
wanted this morning to be, and certainly not the marriage proposal
she had dreamed of. “I’m on the Pill—I won’t get pregnant if that’s all
you’re worried about.”
“I’m sorry, that’s not the only reason we should get married.”
“Then why?” she asked suspiciously.
He let out an exaggerated sigh. “Lynsey, I don’t have time to get
into this with you right now. What do you want me to say in the five
minutes I have before I leave for work?”
She couldn’t believe his glib attitude. “How about saying
something to me like…‘I love you, Lynsey, and I made a tremendous
mistake by not marrying you twenty years ago?’ That would take you

less than thirty seconds to say, and you could have easily gotten to
your precious job on time.”
Suddenly his jaw set and his eyes narrowed. “I didn’t make a
mistake by not marrying you twenty years ago! I let you go to become
a success in life—and you did. I can’t regret that!”
“So, what I thought all these years was correct. I was nothing to
you but a quick and easy way to shed your virginity.” Just saying the
words was devastating.
“That’s not it at all,” he vehemently insisted. “You were always so
intelligent. I mean, you were a sixteen-year-old senior in high school!
Just how many grades did you skip over, anyway?”
“Two,” she answered in a low voice.
“Do you know what would have happened if I hadn’t married Kelly?”
He didn’t wait for her reply. “I’ll tell you what. You and I would have
been ostracized by everyone in this town! We would have had to be
married right away, and we would have had to live with your mother,
because I had no money.”
“My mother loved you. She would have been happy to have us live
with her,” she interjected.
“And we were so naïve, Lynsey. You would have graduated high
school with either a big belly, or a baby in your arms…if you had
graduated at all.”
She crossed her arms over her breasts and looked at the floor. She
was too afraid that if she looked at him she would break down. “Some
of the girls in school were married. A few of them had babies.”
He lifted her chin and forced her to make eye contact with
him. “And you were too smart to be stuck in this town, and just
another housewife. You would have become bored and resentful.”
“I wouldn’t have known the difference,” she countered.
“I had serious doubts then. I still have doubts now,” he admitted.
Her dark lashes flew upward. “What is that supposed to mean?”
“I believe that you will become bored and restless in Unity and will
want to go back to Florida or maybe California. I have a job and a
family here, Lynsey. I don’t ever want to give that up. I’m afraid that
we’ll have a child, and you’ll take my baby and leave. I can not allow
that to happen.”
She couldn’t believe what he was saying. Nothing was further from
the truth. “Do you think I would have sunk so much of my savings
into that house just to abandon it? I would never, ever do what you’re
saying. But if circumstances changed, I would expect you to support
what was best for our family. Couples who are committed make
sacrifices for each other!”
It was becoming clearer and clearer that things were rapidly falling
apart between them.

“Lynsey, didn’t what happened between us last night mean
anything to you?” he asked.
She chuckled unpleasantly. “I suppose that with us living in such
close proximity, last night was inevitable. But don’t worry about it
happening again, Nick. When you get home this evening, I won’t be
here.”
“Where are you going to be?”
She wanted to hurt Nick like she was now hurting. “I’m sure that
Caleb wouldn’t mind me bunking down at his house for a week or
two.”
“Over my dead body,” he seethed. “I will drag you away from him
kicking and screaming if it comes to it. I’ll handcuff you to my bed if
need be. Believe me, Lynsey, I’ll do it!” He flopped down into a kitchen
chair and buried his face in his hands.
“I have to go now, Nick. I’m meeting your sister for breakfast.
Listen to me. You need to pull yourself together. In your line of work,
bad things happen when you lose your concentration.”
When he didn’t reply, she let out a sigh of resignation and headed
for the door. At the last minute she turned to him. “Thanks for almost
making it happen between us.”

Monster In My Closet
Title: Monster in My Closet

I stopped believing in monsters long ago. But I knew I wasn’t imagining things when I found one in my kitchen baking muffins. I’d seen him before: lurking in my closet, scaring the crap out of my five-year-old self. Turns out that was a misunderstanding, and now Maurice needs a place to stay. How could I say no?

After all, I’ve always been a magnet for the emotionally needy, and not just in my work as a wedding planner. Being able to sense the feelings of others can be a major pain. Don’t get me wrong, I like helping people—and non-people. But this ability has turned me into a gourmet feast for an incubus, a demon that feeds off emotional energy. Now, brides are dropping dead all over town, and my home has become a safe house for the supernatural. I must learn to focus my powers and defeat the demon before he snacks on another innocent woman and comes looking for the main course… (-Goodreads)

Review: Game of Hearts

Game of Hearts

Title: Game of Hearts
Author: Kathryn J. Bain
Rating: 4/5

Game of Hearts is about a woman who is down on her luck and fighting to make a good life for herself and her children. Deborah is a single mother working as hard as she can and can barely scrape by. Things would be a lot easier if her ex-husband would cough up some child support that he owes. With supportive friends Deborah manages to keep her chin up and be the great mother that she is.

The book starts out with Deborah buying a cake for her daughter's party. While walking to her car in the rain she bumps into a hunky man named Brandon and the cake goes flying and lands on her head. Brandon being a gentleman goes back into the store and buys her a bigger and even prettier cake. This starts a relationship that is sweet and made me hope that Deborah and Brandon wind up together.

The book as a whole was an enjoyable read. I feel that it accurately described a real life situation and didn't make single parenthood a walk in the park as some books try to do. I suggest this if you enjoy Christian romance books, or even a romance book that isn't full of smut.

Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book to give an honest review.

Review: House of Night

House of Night

Title: House of Night
Author: P.C. Cast (Author), Kristin Cast, Kent Dalian (Editor), Joëlle Jones (Illustrator), Karl Kerschl (Illustrator)
Rating: 4/5

This review is based on a compilation (books 1-5) that I received from the publisher via NetGalley.

Zoey Redbird is a fledgling vampyre that enters the House of Night. The House of Night is a school for vampyre fledglings to learn about their powers and everything they will need to know once they make the Change. Fledglings are teen vampyres that have not made the Change into adult vampyres, for quite a few it is a fatal process.

The artwork is expressive and beautiful. I was a little taken aback when I looked at the cover of the book vs the actual characters in the story. There is a huge difference but do not get me wrong, the characters look great. Their faces are angular and defined and very expressive. The colors are beautiful and suit the scenes. I found the characters suited what I pictured as I read the story.

The graphic novel is separated into sections of each element (Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Spirit). Each has its own story though it is a continuous story. Each section shows a little back story that will help Zoey become a better leader (Freya, Boudicca's daughters, Circe, Cleopatra, Hippolyte and Herakles). There are the normal things you see with teenagers, angst, drama and cliques. The story line flows and you can easily read the entire book in one sitting without realizing how much you have read.

WARNING: There is a very graphic scene in part 2 that might not be suitable for children.

Sally Hansen Salon Effects

I recently started using nail polish. I was never really interested in it up until recently so I'm a novice at applying it and making it look perfect. Sally Hansen's Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips saves me the trouble of going to a salon to get a great looking manicure since I lack the skills of doing it myself. The nail polish strips are very easy to apply, look fantastic, and they are affordable!

This is the packaging it comes in. It includes a tiny little nail file, a wooden stick, and 16 nail strips in varying sizes.

To start out you will want to prep your nails, cut/file/etc so they are read for the strips.
Don't look at my cuticles, they are a mess :(

The strips are very easy to apply and come in great colors/prints.
Look at all the current prints available at Sally Hansen's website (HERE).

If you find that a strip doesn't match the size of your nail you can gently stretch (not too rough or it will rip) it to make it wider. If the strip is too wide you can easily cut it down with little cuticle scissors. I found that all of the sizes provided have matched my nail size.

It can be applied fairly fast once you get the hang of it, and there is no drying time. Seriously, this is a major plus in my book since I always manage to smudge my nails when I try to paint my nails.

Once applied be prepared for at least one person to compliment your nails. I always get compliments when I use these and get asked where I got my nails done.

The polish strips generally last a week on me if I am super active.

Once you need to take the polish strips off you can use nail polish remover and get it off without any problems.

Disclosure: I received Sally Hansen Salon Effects complimentary for testing/review purposes from Influenster.

Review: The Siren's Song

The Siren's Song
Title: The Siren's Song
Author: Jennifer Bray-Weber
Series: Romancing the Pirate #3
Rating: 4/5

Purchase: Amazon, B&N

Gillian McCoy, a tavern singer, is a woman on the run. She stows away on a ship only to find out that it is going down. Captain Thayer Drake comes to her rescue and you can see the sparks between them instantly.

Drake is the captain of the Rissa, a scavenger ship that helps relieve sinking/stranded ships of their cargo. His crew is a fierce and loyal bunch that I grew to enjoy as the book went on.

There are a few steamy scenes scattered around the book. Though not as many as one would hope. You feel the tension between Gilly and Drake, yet nothing happens on several occasions. When there are intimate scenes be prepared for it to be hot!

The plot is very intricate, details you do not believe will connect manage to wiggle their way into the story later. The characters were well thought out and detailed nicely. The plot itself is engaging and leaves you wanting more as the book progresses. The end ties together nicely and sums everything up. I found the book hard to put down and it left me wanting to read more of Jennifer Bray-Weber's work.
